So , Im coming home from New York City this past weekend , and as im driving my radar goes off. Ok fine , not speeding anyway so u know just kept trucking along. I pass a New York Start Trooper , and nothing happens. Good.

about 150 yards after i pass him i see his headlights go on . I'm thinking , this dood probably has to pee. Rest area only like 2 miles ahead any who. So , i keep doing my thing scrolling through my Sirius. He looks like he is gonna blow right past me until he get right next to me and WOOMP WOOMP its the sound of the police. I'm thinking i did nothing wrong , hopefully he'll compliment my car and i will be on my way. License , Registration, yada yada.....

"You know why i pulled you over son?"
"No , sir i do not"
"One of your tail lights is out"
"No sir it is not. That is a German fog light that is built into many euro vehicles."
"No son i believe your taillight is out"
"Sir , i can prove it to you. {popped my dial in} Now if you look sir it is off."
"Are you sure that isn't an aftermarket part? I've been doing this many years and i know aftermarket parts. Im kind a car guy myself "

So me being me , i pull out the manual and im like see this is where it is incorporated into the car. So , he goes "Please step out of the car" , and proceeds to sit in the driver seat ad play with the knob. We shot the **** for a while about cars , he had a 01 CLK or something. Then he goes , have a great day.

I just thought it was odd yet funny , and i would share with you guys. 10 mins later i was home having a Heineken.

I know of a guy who was pulled over in his Audi because a cop thought the same thing. It was probable cause to pull him over. Well, apparently the idiot had been drinking and smelled like alcohol. He was charged with DUI.

And his '01 CLK has a rear fog that is turned on the exact same way.

Except he probably does not have a CLK. Otherwise he would have known like you said. Faked me out the first time it happened to me in my CLK

I agree, don't use your rear fogs unless you're in fog.

I HATE it when people use their fog lights when there is absolutely no fog at all. They're called fog lights for a reason. On clear days they're just distracting annoyances.

always looks like a weird electrical bug or a burnt lightbulb in my opinion. I guess its functional in the fog... kinda, so people know thats the REAR of the car instead of the front? I dunno still looks funny, same goes with those turning lamps... our cars look like a bulb is burnt every time we turn.

Here in Germany the rear fog light is actually the "last resort", which is only allowed to be used in really thick fog with visibility below a distance of 50 meters (which automatically means a max. speed of 50 km/h). It is already (dangerously) annoying when people use their front fogs on perfectly clear nights/days, but using the rear fog light in clear weather is a completely unnecessary distraction to other drivers. On top of that it doesn't even look "cool" in any way.

Regulation varies around Europe, but it remains a low visibility tool.
