Is there anyway to add the 09 hooded dash to existing 08s? I really like the style better than what came with the 08.

What would be involved?

Thanks in advance.

Yea I'm looking at doing this mod as well. I wonder what parts is involved, or would it just be the one hooded part?

I post about this a couple of months ago dont remember which thread exactly though... and yeah mine was on order and its the hole instument cluster replacement. which cost around $1100 CAD. I've order it in october and it still hasn't arrive yet. The place where I order it from (Mb collision richmond) said that no one has order it before so they do not have a part number for it. My guy has to place an order with a 09 vin number in order to get the hooded guage.. well, so far I haven't heard from my guy yet but he said its already on order and mb in germany needs to create a part number for it. I have passed on that order due to other personal reasons but If anyone in the Vancouver or richmond area wants it, give me a shout or pm me. remember that cost is without installation. they need to remove all the instrument cluster in order to replace it.

P.S. There is no other way to replace for the hooded guages other than replacing the hole instrument cluster.

For reference, here is a quick picture of my 09 dash. Hope it helps to illustrate how it looks like.

With best regards,

Wife's car coming early next year, the old design suits my taste better, hopefully Euro cars have not been changed (204.089).

But it does not appear clear to me how the protective "glass" goes on the new one, does it still have one flat screen that needs to be cleaned or is cleaning more complicated?

its still one sheet of plastic in front of the hoods so cleaning is virtually the same and your wifes car will have the hooded gauges

That's like asking why bother with an oil change. Just get a new car.

Too bad we can't figure out how to swap displays without tearing something up in the process.

Agree, swapping Euro to US cluster and vice versa is not simple and even impossible once the car has certain mileage when the cluster locks itself to the car.

"cluster locks itself to the car?"

So what happens? Trunkmonkey comes out if you try to remove it?

Yes, exactly. Let me prove it: have you tried? You haven't because you are afraid of the monkey.

Seriously, the cluster just wont work on another car after it gets "locked". Only a new cluster can be installed to replace an old cluster.

I haven't lost my hope yet. From EPC it looks like this cluster comes with AMG or Sports package cars only. Ours should be the "standard Avantgarde".

Did your car come with codes 950 or 952?

As you say, 950 is the AMG sport package. I just picked up the codes from EPC but 950 is neither available at my place, EPC decodes it simply as "Sport package", perhaps it is available on some other market/country.

You got me. Its that monkey that keeps me from trying it.

Do you think they do that because the actual milage is kept up with in the instrument cluster? This is to avoid putting a low milage cluster in a high milage car. At least with a new one, there is some control that tells that the milage isn't accurate.

Yes, this must be the main reason. On a modern MB the mileage isn't only stored at the cluster, also at the EIS and I believe one other control unit.

You cannot even fool the mileage by putting in a new spare part. Then again, there are computer hackers that tend to find out ways to make at least the cluster readout look different from the real one. Looking at the other parts, including stored mileage figures for services helps identifying fraud.
