FSS average should be 25 000 km (at least on my W221). If you drive decently or long trips, you get more, I had my first service on the W221 at a bit above 30 000 km (19 000 miles).
The car does not need engine oil change at 1000 miles (could even be worse for the engine to change the factory oil at that point). If it affects your warranty or something like that, then you can do it (that would be only to please your dealer/workshop for future warranty issues).

The car should tell you when she wants fresh oil and a filter, but no matter what, change it at least every one year or 10K miles, whichever comes first.(I think the system is set up to remind you every 13K)

A catch 22 cituation of sorts.
1-If you have a motorplan, you cannot change it yourself.
2-You cannot ask the dealer to change it before the indicated time either, cause the sensor in the sump will sence new oil, and step on the service indicator, leaving you never to do a complete service.
3-Was also told that sometimes if new oil was just added by the customer, this can also happen.
So I decided to let the idea go of changing the oil at 5 000 km intervals, although I hate to do just that.
I assume Merc engineers did it to stamp out fraud, just hope the sensor can deferenciate between cheap and correct grading of oils.

To some extent it would but why would you leave that for the sensor? I'll make sure my car is serviced at a shop who knows what oil must be used on an MB (or actually I usually change the oil myself and if not, I'll let them use oil from my own cans, this may not work in the US though).

There is not an "oil condition" sensor in the W204. The service indicator light is controlled soley by the date and/or the mileage. The service idicator light is reset manually by the technician or the owner if they are changing the oil themselves.

You should do an oil change in between services. 13,000 miles is a long time to go on the same oil so at the dealer we tell the customers to do it every 6,000 or so. If you only have 1,000 miles on your car your dealer might do the first oil change for free. I know my dealership does the first oil change for free and the first tire rotation for free.
