Question Engine oil type ?

Well, after searching the forum for the answer and not finding it, I've decided to ask the following:

What kind of oil is put in our C-classes from the factory / at the dealer?

I was under the impression that they put a full synthetic oil in them, but when I asked my service manager about it, he showed me a can of MB-branded petrolium oil.

Does anybody know what's OEM for our cars?

Yeah, I can appreciate that and would like to emulate it. If that's what the dealer uses, great. If not, I have a dilemma.
My dealer will cover all maintenance costs for the duration of my warranty. Yes, all. Including oil changes, which are quite expensive over here. Also, my wife, in typical Japanese fashion, insists on having all work done at our dealer (fortunately, we have a great service mgr and know a couple of the techs, so the only issue is the expense). SOOO, if they don't use the synthetic, I'm gonna have to pay a lot out of pocket--IF I can convince my wife to do it.

What MB branded oil was that, how do you know it was petrolium oil (what ever that is)? Did you read the MB grade from the can, that is the most important figure. It should read 229.5 or 229.51 (the latter is the only one allowed for new diesels with particle filters).

Hmmm... Well, after looking at that link, I'm begin to think I should look a bit closer at the stuff he was showing me. I could have been wrong. I'm pretty sure it was 10W-40, it was in a grey can (1 qt/l capacity) and the only thing other than viscosity that I could read was the Mercedes Benz printed on the side. Honestly, it could just be a language barrier issue--he didn;t understand the word "synthetic" and I don't know how to say it in Japanese. I'll take my English-Japanese dictionary with me next time.

Oh, not knowing the proper terminology, I was using "petrolium oil" to mean what they call "mineral oil" in the link you provided.

Also, you guys responded SOOO quickly! Wow! I was quite surprised! Thanks!

All 229.5 and .51 oils are synthetic, and since your car requires one of these two specifications, there is no reason to worry about anything.

True if they did use MB approved oil, which should be likely. But the owner thought the oil viscosity was 10W-40 which again does not sound right. I would check at some point what the bottle actually reads.

I'd check to see if Mercedes the car company even has a motor oil that's labeled as such.
