weird whistling noise on my c300

On my 2009 C300 4Matic Sport I have a weird whistling noise. My friend thinks its the transmission. I'm unsure, it seems to make the noise around 50-40mph when I am not stepping on the gas. Once I give it a little gas it comes back. Has anybody else experienced this issue?

Manually place the trans in a lower gear while travelling at your "whistle" speed. If it goes away, it is likely something else. Does is EVER make the noise at any other speeds?

try this: At about the speed where you would encounter the problem, 40-50mph, hit Neutral and step on gas, this may help to isolate your issue between wind noise, engine or transmission.

Make sure you didn't get this, or something similar, slipped into your tailpipe.

Here's what I found about the same problem on another forum...

Question:
"Does anyone else hearing a whining noise coming from the front end while driving on the highway.
When I accelerate its fine and then when I'm driving about 50-60 and left go of the gas and let it roll i hear a whining noise coming from the front end of my C300. Anyone else with the same issue?"

Answer:
"I found a DTB about "howling " noises coming from the drivetrain area.
It can be corrected by installing a clip(000-994-29-60) on the transmission shift rod"

What should I tell the dealer when I bring it in? "Hey can you install a clip (part number 000-994-29-60) on my transmission shift rod?" I'm sure they'd have questions, and what would I tell them? Some random guy on a forum said it was a solution? Any more information would help, thanks

You could try. Sooner or later the dealerships realize that forum members know a lot about the cars they drive.

whistling sound on new c300

Is there any update on what the problem was that caused the whistling sound on the c300? I just bought mine and the whistling sound starts when I reach around 50 mph. Dealer has it and claims they can't hear it, so I'm taking him for a ride tomorrow to point out the sound, but have little confidence that they'll be able to remedy given they claim the sound doesn't exist. Any info would be helpful!

C300 4matic
I had the similar problem (whistling sound around 100km/h, 60km/h) when I got my c300 4matic more than a year ago. Mercedes attempt to fix it many times but all failed, they even replace the transmission, but still no luck. They confirmed it comes from the transmission but they cannot fix their own product. They even claim, after failing to fix, it is a characteristic of this car. Very nicely said BS! The technician from the dealership bodyshop even told me I am not the only car with similar problem at that time, I was told there were about 7 came in for similar issues.

Well, after long complaints and dispute with dealership and customer relation dept, I gave up. So this is my first merc but last too, and I am staying with this sound for another 3 years, then I will get rid of it asap before warranty expires.

I'm so sorry to hear about all of the trouble you've experienced with your dealer. Mine has been a little more sympathetic, at least initially, and promised to get to the bottom of the problem with corporate.I'll let you know what they find, which will hopefully be a positive resolution for me and one that you can use with your dealer. How utterly frustrating!

at long last, resolution!

Hi, i promised to get back to you about any resolution by my dealership on the strange whistling sound on my c300. after much ado, my dealership EUROMOTORCARS of bethesda, maryland, convinced corporate MB to do the necessary work to fix the loud noise, which required a brand new transfer case/transmission. no small feat given that it cost them over $11,000 to do it. the dealership was fantastic about it all, realizing that a happy customer is a returning customer, although i will likely never buy a c-class again since this problem seems inherent in that car. but i will buy another car from this dealership based solely on their treatment of me and resolving the problem. perhaps this will compel your dealer to act similarly?? best of luck to you.

I have the same issue on my 2008 4matic C300, been there since new. Under deceleration at 29, 65, 105 and 125 kmh. Whines like crazy, they have changed the wheel bearings, shift rod, transmission, front differential all made no difference.
The noise drives me crazy going down hill at 65, take your foot off and it will whine all the way down the hill. And to think I had one foot in the G35S and changed my mind over a few minor differences. Good thing I leased cause this could be a deal killer when trying to resell. 2 more years and I am off to Japanese.

I wonder if this is only on 4Matics as I have never heard it. The only sound (other than elephant ears) I had was a whistle from the rear door the AD fixed it at the 1000 m checkup.

My car doesnt "whistle" but its more of a high pitched sound, almost the sound of a radio that gets interference from other electronics or grounding issue. But it isnt the audio system because I still hear it when I turn the card deck off.

I think i will just live with it because I am more worried about them replacing parts and in turn cause other issues with the car.

2010 C300 4Matic
I just picked up a 2010 C300 4matic Sport and I noticed a whistle or wind noise coming from the driver's door/window. I thought it was a seal problem around the door or window. It kind of sounds like the window isn't rolled up all the way or the door isn't closed all the way.

After reading this, I hope it's not a transmission issue. I pretty much only hear it at highway speeds. I've read in some other post that it may be the rubber seals around the doors. I have the new mirrors, so it shouldn't be that. Did any of you think it was the window at first or is mine likely something different?

Most auto transmissions do not like being put into neutral at 50 mph. The 5 speed says below 50 KPA. Best to check your book.

Wow.. I have the same whistling (but more a high-pitched sound) too! It seems to be coming from the frontal passenger area for me, and only seems evident at start up and when idling / low speeds.

FYI: I have a 2009 C300 MT
