4 Matic in VT

I went up to Vermont Wednesday, snow and ice everywhere. My C300 4 Matic made it up the steep winding driveway, Land Rover Discovery did not and the same for Saab SUV. MB 4 Matic was excellent in the snow and ice. Much better system. It was better than my 2006 ML350 was.

I had to make an unplanned trip up to Middlebury, VT and was fearing the worst in my stock 2009 C350 RWD with 17" Michelin Pilot Hx tires. However, I was very pleased to find I could get around very well. The only precaution I took was to place a 3" deep tray containing about 100 lbs of road cinders in the trunk (figured the weight might help and if I got stuck the cinders could get me moving again).

It seems that the car has excellent F/R balance, that and the ESP combine to make the car very predictable and able to maintain directional control very nicely. The grip of the Michelins was not that great, and so I had to really watch the downhill bits when driving on ice.

Bottom line is the stock setup kinda got the job done this time. But, if the snow had been much deeper, or I if I had ventured onto completely untreated roads, I would definitely have needed some real winter/snow tires to preclude getting stuck.

The 4-Matic system of the W204 in combination with some snow tires is just great.
