switching transmission modes

i have noticed when riding in other peoples cars or when watching pepole backing out of parking spots, that most people dont actually make a full stop before throwing the transmission from reverse to drive.

Granted they are moving at only 1-2 mph, but I tend to make a complete stop before switching gears... wouldnt switching while still moving even a tad bit put stress on the transmission & over time break it?

What do you guys do?

I make sure I stop completely before changing into reverse.

Also at a complete stop when selecting park.

I do not rely on "Park" when parking on a slope. Always use the parking brake as I don't know how strong the "Park" pawl is . Does anyone ?

The tranny isn't that sensitive. Of course changing from reverse to drive while the car is moving introduces more stress to the tranny than stopping first but this is really marginal as long as you are not stepping on the gas pedal while doing it. It is (mostly) the same clutches that operate anyway and the stress is of absolutely different order when accelerating at full speed and changing gears, and I believe most of us do that.

It could be more of an issue for the rest of the drive train when any play on gears changes from reverse to drive or vice versa. But even here not that bad at all when the engine is idling.

do our trannys "really" have direct link to the shifter?
its more electronics that control the shift... i doubt it will have a such a impact on it versus a real manual/auto car.

just like how the car wont let u downshift the car from 6 gear to 2nd gear while travelling at 130km/h, it's smarter then you lol :P
