Not sure about any coil issues...But i had posted about this problem couple months back...and majority responces were to always leave the A/C button on dont need to really ever take it off since the A/C doesnt activate unless to put the temp wheel below the 50deg mark i believe...But i had that odor problem for couple weeks well..smelled like wet dog....but after i left the A/C button on for a couple of days it cleared out itself...and that was about 2-3 months ago. Hasn't happened again, no need to take to dealer or anything. That's experience with that issue.

My dealer acknowledged the problem and fixed it for free. 1 year later no smell. Don't let them get away with it, make them fix it. As I have said earlier, this is a premium motor vehicle and should not suffer from a problem like this.

As Andystyle says above - just leave it on auto with the A/C button on, in fact, I think it even goes on when you hit auto.

Almost 2 years and never a hint of this problem - I just let the car manage itself, all I do it set the temp and drive

is there any disadvavntage to having the AC on all the time? Loss of power due to the AC system being on? More fuel consumption? I hardly ever have my AC on during the winter, i just use the vent & turn up the heat.

My dealer told me to just turn off my AC 5 minutes before arriving at my destination...

Another round of ICE
Any time you defrost your windshield, your A/C (actually, the compressor) is utilized to dehumidify that air. Otherwise, the inside of the windshield would fog. The solution remains to set the unit to AUTO.

There is no doubt that you are using more fuel with the AC compressor operating. It might not be as much as earlier model compressors but it is still using fuel.I can notice the increased consumption in my 220 CDI diesel.

I always turn my AC off 5 minutes before reaching my destination.

I believe the manufacturers are now lowering fuel consumption by redesigning how auxilliarys are powered eg electric steering ie lower power losses compared with a hydraulic power steering p/p being run 100% of the time.
