Ok, I've got an update. This whole thing is turning into more trouble that I had bargained for.

So got a letter from the US Customs and Border Protection and according to Code K09-0196 OT, the shipment is being detailed because the commercial shipment value is above $2000. What I have to do is obtain Customs clearance by filing a Formal Entry at a Customs port, then I have to fax a copy of "Delivery Authorized Document" to the customs mail facility at JFK Airport. This sucks cause the nearest customs port is 40 miles away, so 80 miles round trip and is only open mon-fri 8am-4:30pm. This means I'll have to take time off work to go file this.

I'm going to call them tomorrow (monday) to see if there's any way around this because there might be a clause that says these items were not purchased for sale or commission (which it isn't and wasn't), but the fine print says only if it was for the use of personal or household use of me or my family. We'll see.

Anyways, this is just to give you all an update and if this is the trouble I have to go through to get this done, honestly, I'm not enthusiastic about hosting another one as this was way more trouble than it's worth.

But the total value cant possibly be over 2 grand?, how many kits are ordered?
btw, isnt it possible for the customs office to fax the Formal Entry to you, let you fill it out and then send it to JFK?

That's what I'm going to call and find out tomorrow when their offices are open. I did a brief search on customs website and didn't find the form. If they could save me the trip, that'd be a big help. If anyone has any experience with this and can offer some tips, that'd be great. And yes, it was over $2k worth of LEDs. When they opened it up, they said they saw the packaging slip with the total cost. If that little piece of paper wasn't there, I doubt they would have known and wouldn't have triggered the red flags.

I'm not extremely familiar with importing items over the $2,000 cap without any duty but in the past I've had couriers handle my $6,000+ imports in many occasions. They serve as a broker and gets items in extremely fast and with no problem. The only caveat is that it costs more than your standard international post.

In the end, I believe there may be a duty levied on these items. I followed a little on this thread but didn't think it would be over $2,000 worth. If I did, I would have posted something about it. The duty won't be much total and I'm guessing most of the people in the GB won't mind paying.

If there is a duty, please help out Azn_C300 with it.

If we have to pay taxes for the lights then we should do it

Everyone should pay back their amount

because Azn did this for us for nothing out of it

So Azn if we have to pay taxes

make a list on how many sets to how much you have to pay

like

1 - $5
2 - $10
3 - $15
4 - $20

But yeah something like that

Anyways sorry for the hassle and thank you so much for the help Azn

Thanks

I know its a bit late for this, but you should have asked the seller if they could attach a lower value invoice with the goods, unforunately if something happens with the package this lower value is all you would get out of the insurance.

actually, I just checked, and the final price was under 2000 (close but still under). I've been calling the customs agent to see what the hell is going on, but his phone just rings and rings. I'll keep calling every half hour to see if I can clear this up. Hopefully we can get this figured out.

Ok, just got off the phone with the customs officer. First off, US customs is employed by a bunch of friggin morons. I told them that the total amount was less than $2000 and to look at the invoice and they said, well, it's in swedish krona and they'd have to do the conversion to see if it was under $2000. I was like "Shouldn't you have fraking done that before you held it in customs and sent me this letter!!" There's also a nice notice that anything held in customs past 6 days will start incurring storage fees. Well, looking at the notice, it was signed off on the 22nd, but I didn't get the letter till saturday and today was the earliest I could call them (5 days). I'm hoping they don't take typical government time to process it and get it out before that 6 day mark.

Anyways, long story short, they said they'd actually go perform the krona to dollar conversion, but said they believed me and would ship it out, but since it's via US parcel post to california from new york, it could take a week or so after it gets out of customs.

.........sigh...... at least that's progress. If I do help out on another group buy, I'll definitely have some lessons learned here. Sorry to everyone who are patiently waiting. Was out of my hand, but since I'm organizing this group buy, felt some personal fault in the delay.

Hey, not your fault, you shouldn't feel bad at all. If anyting, we're the ones feeling bad that you have to carry this burden for 20 something heads.

At least from what they're telling you for now, seems like it should work out fine. I don't mind waiting en extra week for it to get to Calif as long as Customs don't give us a hard time and make us pay extra $ for taxes, fees, etc.

Keep up the great work!
