Ipod interface cable UPDATE.

So, there's a new ipod interface cable. It has a black tip vs the old one with the white tip.

The part # for the NEW cable is B6 782 4532.

If I bought the cable, would it be hard to install it myself? I think the cable cost $50.

Is there any instructions on how to do this? I tried searching but had no luck.

Thanks.

That is correct! I just ordered it myself too and according to the MB service bulletin this is not covered under warranty.

The person I spoke to @ Mercedes suggested for me to buy it and install it myself so I don't think it should be too hard to do. But when I pick up the part I will make sure to ask him for the instructions and then I will post it here.

It can charge the iPhone and new iPods. That is the difference.

The updated cable with black connector will charge your Iphone / Ipod Touch / Ipod classic and 4th generation Nano. Currently I have the white connector and I am unable to charge my Iphone or 4th Gen Nano.

Why not just get this and save the installation time and money?

In one of the threads, someone stated that this device hinders the sound quality.

The cable is $50. If its an easy installation, I would rather buy a cable for $50 vs getting an adaptor around $30.

The new cable will not charge older iPods. With the adapter you can charge all.

from what i remember when i installed the aux extension, the other end of the ipod cable is connected to a black box inside the side panel. The plug looks somewhat like those on an internet/LAN cable, so that should be alomost the easiet thing to replace.

There's also a black socket thing that holds the cable in place on the wall of the glove box that you need to loosen to take the cable out, but it should pop right out with a firm push.

The only harder part is probably to open the side panel, which is not that hard either.

Based on this useful info I picked up this new cable, and as far as I can tell it also charges old iPods. Dealer told me so and I hooked up my wife's old Nano (first gen) and it charged without any problems (I know it did because it had a flat battery).

I can charge my iPhone with the white cable, is that because I have a First Generation iPhone? I am about to upgrade to the 3G S, I'm assuming it won't charge this?

I'm going to call BS on that one. The audio would be going out via a straight digital connection which couldn't be degraded (unless it is completely dropping in and out). These adapters just have a few resisters in them to drop the voltage down from the previously supported firewire equivalent to 5V (equal to USB).

If you prefer to buy a cable over an adapter then that is fine, but don't do it because of sound quality.

Assuming we are talking about the same cable (for use with option 518 - Media Interface), then this is really zero effort. Open the glove compartiment, feel around the top left for the connector and plug it in. Obviously if you have the old cable installed, plug it out first. Can't take more than 20 seconds.

totally agree but I have that adapter thing from amazon and it looks retarded as hell would prefer to have just changed the cable, and am hoping its just a plug out plug in matter.

Griffin also makes a converter, which may be better. I don't have either so I can't comment.

I took a look at the ipod cable in my glovebox lastnight. It looks like I have to remove the glove box in order to access the cable plug. The cable goes through a gorment. I didnt see any ethernet like connector for the ipod cable.

Don't get me wrong it works fine it just doesn't look like a proper solution. It looks like what it is a 1inch+ connector between your ipod and your ipod cable.
