Two options, UMI or retrofit Comand

UMI ~ $1200

Comand ~ $1500-3000

I've understood that the US version of UMI is of the order of $2000. Perhaps this is related to their policy of not allowing SCN coding for Comand retrofits.

This actually reminds me about a question I should have asked: If the car is SCN coded for UMI, the cluster should not know that the navi display has been activated for Comand or UMI? What happens if the workshop codes the car to have UMI present when Comand actually was retrofitted, what do you think vic?

Its not the same procedure, after UMI is installed you only need to enter the IC and enter "customer specific changes" and choose "enable UMI".
UMI lies "outside" the code system and is just tapped in.

I have UMI and my cost was about $1.8k installed..another member got his for $1.2k installed from dealer (he works for the dealer thus no installation charge)
The biggest advantage for UMI is the free traffic update here in the States plus the ability to control iPod from main screen..
However, if you are in EU..command can get live traffic update and UCI will also give you the extra connections..

Can you explain further, I understand that the IC coding procedure would be different for the two. But if the cluster is coded for "UMI present", what would it show if the head unit actually was Comand and was sending navi info to the cluster?

Is the CAN bus configured to read navi messages from a particular address only? The head unit and the UMI must appear with different addresses on the bus. Or is there some other reason why the cluster would not show the info from Comand in this case?

A pity, it would have been a pretty simple way to "crack" the cluster to work with Comand.

Actually do not know exactly how UMI communicates with the HU, the UMI is only connected to the car through a adapter cable wich is mounted between the HU and the stock regular harness.

However the two appears to have the same IC functionality, as long as the two systems utilizes the same bus address it should work.
According to WIS, the UMI unit communicates with HU using MOST, the HU then talks to the IC through CAN B

Its very easy to enable UMI through SDS so a dealer should be able to fix that in 10 min´tops.
