Currently we cant do it. I think you need XM to get XM traffic

Well, this may not be helpful to you, but I know the navi is capable of real time traffic info because it's standard here in Japan. No charge, no signup, it's included in every navi system sold here.

I'm guessing that you're in the states, in which case I believe you have to subscribe to some kind of paid service (the XM traffic which Savage mentioned, perhaps).

...but you'll need additional hardware at the very least....

currently US spec COMAND does not offer traffic data (TMC) period.

That's truly unfortunate. It's really nice to be forewarned about construction / wrecks/ traffic jams on your intended route and be able to detour around them. I'm guessing we pay for it via taxes over here.

To be accurate, the navigation DVD content does not include "TMC" related info pus the licence. US Comand as such would support traffic because traffic info is received via FM radio. It already works in the US on the W221 and W204 with UMI. Unfortunate that there is no DVD update to include TMC (or the US equivalent).

The conclusion is anyway right and the only thing that matters.

Traffic data could have been easily implemented either via RDS (fm) or Sirius (satellite). It begs the question as to why the decision was made to exclude this here in the states. We can only speculate licensing, however, as noted above, other models, and even the same model overseas, has this much needed feature.

hmm - see this thread I started yesterday. I had pictures of little yellow cars on my 2009 GL NAV and had never seen it before. Seems like it is traffic updates (although it was inaccurate as there was little traffic)...first time I've seen this in the 2 months I've owned however. Maybe it was a glitch? Took a pic with my cameraphone and included in thread link below:
