i had chosen the magnaflow over the shop fab x pipe..........no regrets. it sounds sporty enough to where it's not an over kill considering it's still a mercedes.

I'm actually looking to do this mod myself. Is this the correct kit to get? http://www.magnaflow.com/02product/02xpipekits.asp

Seeing that it is a universal kit, was it a "plug and play" welding job or did you require extra piping to make it fit?

That is not the correct kit. You really need an "X-pipe" that allows for two parallel pipes that converge in the "X" and then exit into two more parallel pipes and not the right angles of this kit as it will end up too wide. A good shop can build you one or they can likely locate a magnaflow, or other brand, for you.

i agree.........the shop i went to did a great job in making sure the x pipe is removable if need so. the x pipe i used is the " universal x pipe " from magnaflow, which i highly recommend.

If you go magnaflow, there are the ones you want and the one I have:
http://www.magnaflow.com/02product/s...e=main&id=8389

No need for full pipe kit. Just the Tru-X section with 2.25 openings.

For everyone that has installed the X-pipe: Do you notice at around 4500 RPM that the exhaust tone completly changes and the car really screams? I really like the exhaust note under 4000 but it sounds to trumphety or "blatty" above 4000-4500 RPM.
Anyone have any knowledge on how are valve timing is handled? This kinda reminds me of my friends 94' V-Tech Prelude. It would sound like a totally different car when the valves switched into high RPM mode.

i was just at a mineki shop and the guy wanted to charge me $180 (includes labor) for just running 2 straight pipes instead of the x-pipe.....anyone have just straights instead of the x-pipe? is there anything wrong with doing that and is that a good price for the work?

straight pipes sound like crap on our cars. $180 is kind of steep.

you'll lose some low end torque till your ECU compensates after a week or two.

Another thing, the length of the x-pipe is shorter than the length of the resonator so your muffler shop will need to attach straight pipe extenders to the end to bridge the length. Not a big deal, but just be aware.
