That actually looks like a fairly minor to moderate side swipe. It doesn't look like a major change in velocity. The side bags blew? The results of the FMVSS 214 compliance test typically produce significantly more passenger compartment intrusion, although I have not seen the C Class test photos.

The primary impact point seems to be just above the sill, and although the rear door seems to have a closure obstacle, the front and rear pillars and roof structure show no apparent deflection.

Of course, we are all glad she is OK, but the car seems to have absorbed whatever the source of the force was well, with relatively minor deformation. Do you know if the floorpan was involved?

Not sure on floor pan
Insurance adjuster said he knew it was totaled from 50 feet away.
I looked at it and the post between doors was in bad shape .
He said it wasn't even close to being repairable.
Good new New car , Bad news 2010's are more $$$

Ahh, look again.

The wheel was pulled back, taking the entire rear with it. That's where the gaps come from above and behind the door. The car is now a slight U-shape. And with the bags blown, it's scrap.

You're right about that rear wheel. Wasn't certain if it was body-in-white or suspension component damage causing the angulation. I wasn't able to pick up on the U-shape distortion, which would suggest the pan was cortorted. I would like to see a shot of the b-pillar with the door open. It may have run afoul of the manufacturer's guidelines for repair if the pan is involved. I know Saab has that requirement (learned that when my daughter's car was totaled). But, from a purely economic point of view, I certainly see sheetmetal, but the overall structure looks surprisingly intact for a total, figuring its about a $30,000 value. The preservation of the passenger compartment certainly is a wonderful result for the occupants!!

I've now seen a couple of comments about air bag deployment indicating a totalled car. This is not correct. Bag replacement does not cost anywhere near enough to justify a total, and some frontal impacts can result in blowing the bag, but not enough damage to toss out the whole car. Been there with another Mercedes.

I think the adjuster recognized that the cost of repair would likely exceed the percentage that they use of the car's value.

Totalling it is a lucky thing for the owner since this amount of damage would have a very large influence on it's value after it's put back together.

When I traded in my '95 C280 the dealer wanted me to sign a document attesting that the car had never had any body repair. I think that any repaired wrecks go the auction since they likely don't qualify for a CPO warranty. And your trade-in value would be so far down it would take a strong light to find it.

I always wondered where the front passenger airbag deploys from? I could not see anything on the dash that would appear to popout. Any idea? just curiousity

And yes, glad the wife is ok, a car is just a car and thats what we have insurance for.

actually comes out in a weakened part of the dash, usually a slit like opening. The bag pops out of there. same with the one for the driver. ever wonder why the entire cover doesnt hit your face?

Thx for all the concerns for my wife !
Much appreciated.
She is bruised but considering impact came out very well.
The rear wheel was perpendicular to car after accident. They had to move it back straight to tow. With as strong as the impact, I would say a VERY safe car. That's why we will buy a Mercedes again.

As she said "IT ALL HAPPENED SO FAST" . Going opposite directions , even police report is unclear. Still working out details. Could be 50/50 responsibility . Considering a 360* spin after impact I would say car performed well.

Glad your wife is ok... good to see the C's hold up

You should pull some of the little parts off... like maybe the foglights that break and exhaust tips... floor matts... nothing insurance would notice... and maybe the schatz parts

will insurance reinburse you for the amg's?

also do you still have your lux shift knob... i'd love one for my sport

good luck on your 2010 search!
