Shadows Tell a Tale
First, the car is very dirty in the photo. You see a lot of dust on the car, some from "off roading" (dirt and gravel) and some from rain and such. In fact it's parked in a gravel lot at the end of a gravel road. So it's dirty.
Second, the photo is from a cell phone, 'cause that's all I had when I noticed this.
Third, the sun is at a very low angle, behind the car, and slightly to the passenger side, but sufficient to shine along the car and produce shadows.
Now, look at the shadow just forward of the leading edge of the driver's door. Notice anything? The body panels don't line up. Look above and you'll see that the tops do, but about mid-way down they don't align.
So: is the car "defective?" or is this a design element to allow the doors to open without pinching?
I never notice this in direct sun, or when the car is clean. I can run my hand along it and feel the gap. It's not very much, but this photo shows it well.
