Overinflation of tires for high speed driving... Why?

Living in Germany, I regularly exceed 100mph and cruise at 115-125 when I can get away with it. I follow the manufacturer's recommendation of adding 4psi per tire as directed in the gas cap door for this reason. This does make for a noticeably harder ride as the downfall.

Does anyone know why this is recommended by MB?

It's not just MB recommendation, it's Physics. Friction makes the tires heat up more than usual and expand, thus the need for more air to maintain the same cushion. But, at low speeds it may get jumpier.

So the higher the friction, due to load increase or to higher speed heat up, the higher the desirable cold tire pressure, to the limit stamped on the wall of the tire.

I don't know what you're ridding but I'd recommend you try Yokos V550, they will ride more cushioned and silenced than most if not all in the market. I ride the 225-45R17 at 35 psi and it is peachy kou.
