Brake Backing Plate Problems

My steering was, once again, getting a bit "crunchy/poppy" in reverse with the wheels turned. I thought it was going to be another set of Torque Arm Bearings to be replaced but it ended up being an issue with my front brake backing plates. Apparently there is an issue with water retention/rusting and they both had to be replaced along with the speed sensor seals.
My service advisor wasn't able to give me much info as to what the problem was and I really didn't have time to drill down to find out what the issue is.
Anyhow, do you guys know what is going on with the plates and why something like that would need to be replaced so soon?

Does anyone know of any common issues with this?

Nothing that I know of. Isn't there a TSB thread here somewhere? The other possibility is go to the site that is dedicated to MB problems, that was linked here about a year or more ago. If I can find it I'll link it again.

I know this response isn't any help, but it helps keep this topic afloat.

The only problem I have had is stones lodging between the stone guard & the disc causing a rough crunching sound. Removal sorts out the problem.
You must drive in horrendous conditions ( salt/ sandblasting grit) for the plate to be rusted & the gasket to be leaking water ?

That's the weird part. There is no salt from ice removal or sea spray here in Atlanta and my first year of ownership was during a record breaking drought. Hopefully it is more of a redesign issue than totally crappy materials breaking down so quickly.
