Replace HID bulbs
Hey guys, I was wondering if anyone can tell me what is a good brand of HID bulbs? I have the P2 w/c is 4300k stock HID and I want to change it to 6000k. Is it hard to replace them or should I take it to the dealer and have them do it? Also, is there a DIY on how to replace the high beam bulbs? Thanks!

I tried looking at the manual, it didn't have any instructions on how to change the HID bulb nor change the high beam.
I was expecting replies like... the philips bulb is good, the apexcone, sylvania, etc. Anyway, thanks for all the replies and I guess I'll do more searching, rather than posting questions.

OEM brands are OSRAMS and Philips, our C used OSRAMS. Changing bulbs is definitely a DIY, here a pic showing how it looks on how to remove the bulb, it just two metal clips holding the bulbs.

The left shuld be the stock one. But as color shifting involves, eventually OEM bulbs will looks blue too. Just might take a couple of years, hehehe.

with D2S (most widely used design), Osrams tend to be a scootch 'mellower'
in hue than the Phillips. natch, devil in the details as there are many models,
lot numbers, etc. here is something from my notes on Phillips D2S bulbs.

doubt the list will have grown in recent years vis a vis model #s
85122: D2S. Color is bluer white with slight greenish tone.
85122+: D2S CM (Plus). 5000K. Aftermarked only. Ment to pair up with used 85122. Released Q4, 2002.
85122WX: D2S Ultinon. Aftermarked only. Released Dec 2001. Ultinons label on bulb were later relabled to " Philips BL-2 Non automotive use"
85123: D2S. Color is bluer white with slight purple tone. Not officially on Philips product list. Nevertheless, it is found in some BMW OEM HID headlamps. Click here for a color comparison to 85122.
85407: D1S. Integrated ignitor.
85407+: D1S CM (Plus). Integrated ignitor. Aftermarked only. Ment to pair up with used 85407. Released Q4, 2002.
85126: D2R.
85126+: D2R CM (Plus). 5000K. Aftermarked only. Ment to pair up with used 85126. Released Q4, 2002.
85126WX: D2R. Ultinon. Aftermarked only. Released Dec 2001.
85408: D1R. Integrated ignitor.
85408+: D1R CM (Plus). Integrated ignitor. Aftermarked only. Ment to pair up with used 85408. Released Q4, 2002.
"CM" means color match.
There is a 4 letter date code following, which looks like this: L029, C024 etc. What they mean is probably not very useful unless you do warranty work for Philips.
Who is OE manufacturer of HID bulbs?
Philips and Osram are the ones widely used in cars in North America/Europe. (GE is still trying to get their feet into car manufacturers budget.) They come with standard 4100K color temperature only. This is the only legal HID bulb color temperatire under DOT/ECE regulations. Many projector headlights in upscale vehicles may look like they have higher Kelvin rating, but that is an optical effect.

Raymond any idea on why MB uses Osrams instead of Philips? I have also question myself of this because my other two cars with hid uses Philips D2S which were Honda's.

Osram/Sylvania is Germany/USA, vs Philips is Netherlands.
dont know if NAmerican models differ from Euro, etc etc. so anything in my
pea brain would simply be speculative

i was comparing the two, philips and osram, the philips D1S bulb are a lot heaver than the osrams. I read an independent article somewhere on the net about retrofitting, and the guys said, mano to mano, he think the philips are a bit brighter and bluer. You guys think the philps are brighter than the osram? Or it something that is not even noticeable.

i think if you A<>B them, you can tell slight difference. but in the end, they're
not really noticeable on the road. bear in mind that color balance between
two competitive bulbs may appear to be brighter, but eyeball isn't the best
measure of lumens when separated by couple hundred ēK.
i dont think it's worth quibbling over because 1) lumens, vs color rendition,
vs comfort, etc is one thing; 2) when so many bulb designs are available,
is it really worth arguing one model/lot # is better than another?; 3) D1S
have integral igniters, don't they?....so weighing the 'bulb' really isn't
realistic, i.e. the weight difference is in the electronics within the box.
