C300: car is dead.
C300: car is dead.
Okay, i don't own this C300, it's a friend of mines and has an issue with it. Obviously its new, less than 5k on it. Car ran fine and was perfect. One day he goes out to start it.. nothing. Screen says "inoperative. Do not proceed". When you put the key in it, it says "remove key".
So he had the car towed to the MB dealership. They give him a loaner car and look at it. He gets a phone call a little later saying they've never heard or seen of this problem. They have no idea
They call up some other MB dealerships for advice and.. nothing. They don't know either.
They call Mercedes and...
.. but they said they think its a sensor. I can't remember what sensor it was, has something to do with lights/ABS or something.
Anyways, they ordered the parts and changed it today. Nothing.
Anybody had this problem? It's kinda funny because my C32 is having problems.. but not really. At least he does have a warranty. He's gettin pretty aggravated with it as he hasn't had his car and nobody can figure it out.
I'm just posting to see if anybody has seen or heard of this. Seems pretty weird the dealerships and MB don't know whats up.
When i do find out the end result, i will post it.

Hopefully they will be able to figure out what the problem is. From the sounds of it, it has to be an electronic fault. Hopefully this will be a learning experience for MB and a simple fix will be found.
Let us know what happens as this type of thing is kind of scary for those of us who plan on keeping a car until they die...that used to be metaphorical...now it seems to be literal.

MB programmed it to say "inoperative" and they can't figure it out? You never want to be the person with the problem that "they've never heard of or seen." I would try to give it back as well.
Anyways, haven't heard from the guy today, but when i'll do i'll let yall know. What if this were to happen out of warranty? Guess he'd be screwed huh?

idler pulley seized and broke off. Ruined my waterpump. It's been sittin for a while as i've been kinda lazy. Needs tires and brakes as well. Just tired of spending money on cars.

I am not sure what you mean, the new york state lemon law for example covers a car for 2 years/18K miles. The dealer has 20 days to commence/agree to repair the car, has 4 attempts to repair, and the car can't be out of service for > 30 days - if any of those conditions are met, the car can be lemoned.
Where these lemon laws don't work - is when the nature of the complaint doesn't make the car undriveable, the problem has to "substantially impair" the value of the car to the consumer. So if your passenger sun visor comes loose, even if the dealer takes 5 attempts to repair it, you can't use the lemon law to get a new car. A friend of mine had a car that made a suspension noise over particular road bumps - went to the dealer many times with it, they could never fix it - couldn't use the lemon law because the noise didn't render the car undriveable or "substantially impair" it.

More than worried about lemon laws for a relay and a wire fault, I am concerned with the quality and artificial intelligence of the MB Star Diagnostics software. Specially as it relates to the ability of the people who prepared and tested it. What did they do to reproduce the fault and verify the advise of "do not start the car", or why was it meant to cover when included. I hope they did not drop the ball and forgot it at Chrysler.
