tpms rebuild kit? do i need it?
hey so i have a question and im hoping you guys can answer it.
i went to discount tire and had to order a tire because i got a nail in my rear (4th tire due to a nail in under a year) and they charged me for a tpms rebuild kit. should i pay them for that service? answers appreciated.

I do believe so because they can't leave the TPMS on the wheel because it may get damaged by the mounting machine and the prybars they use to seat the tire. The rebuilt kit is probably nothing more then some new crush/self-locking nuts/washers, but alas, a necessary $7.50.

I highly recommend it. I had my old tires mounted on my new rims and always had problems with TPMS warnings coming up on my screen and loss of tire pressure. The washers/gaskets eventually begin to dry-rot and need to be replaced.
Don't take a chance.

Our TPMS sensors can't be rebuilt!!!! If you were charged for a rebuilt kit you should get a refund.
Many other TPMS sensors are designed with a 2 piece design and this is where Discount Tire replaces the valve stem portion, lock nut etc. Our sensors are one piece and there is nothing to replace besides the "whole sensor".
I just went through this with new summer tires from Discount Tire a few weeks ago so trust me on this.

Unless they charged the OP some outrageous amt like $100, the rebuild kit is indeed just the new washers, etc. Tire Rack asked me whether I wanted "TPMS transfer kits" along w/ my wheel purchase, so it's the same thing.

Discount Tire's rebuild kit "replaces" the valve stem as the main part due to "possible" corrosion. Our valve stems can't be replaced as it's a single piece with the sensor as mentioned.
If you want a new washer and o-ring then by all means pay the "full" rebuild cost as they don't itemize it. I see no need in paying $35-40 for all 4 wheels for parts that are fine. Too much waste on certain things that don't need to be.
