There is no factory in Stuttgart, except the engine factory. There is one near by at Sindelfingen though.

Yes, you need to start emailing booking what you want now.
The Engine/Transmission factory in Stuttgart (next to the museum) has a tour a couple days a week, but you have to get on the list beforehand, or try to. The tour is free, but you need a museum ticket which you can buy at the door.
Then there is Sindelfingen (a few miles from Stuttgart) . You could email the museum people and ask them for the email address to the Sindelfingen factory tour people. The tours here are more often, but you also need to book ahead. Sindelfingen tours are free. They actually build cars at Sindelfingen. The same place they do Euro Delivery.
Just to note, U.S. C Classes come from Bremen, Germany (in northern Germany) or East London, South Africa.
So you won't see where your car was made, but it's just as interesting. Except that the engine/transmission factory in Stuttgart is where your engine and transmission was made.
Also, the factories close from like late July through most of August I believe, for summer holiday. If you go then, the museum is all you can see.
Museum is closed on Mondays I believe as well (but double check, not positive).

Go to Stuttgart, and take the tour with the audio. The cool thing is you get to keep the lnayard from the audio guide and it says Mercedes Benz all over it. Sweet keepsake.

We just did the factory tour at the Kundencenter in Sindelfingen in April. We showed up at 3:30 or so, asked about tours, and got on the next one at 4:00. In the 1/2 hour waiting for the tour to start, we went to the restaurant and had some fantastic potato soup and beer. There were 8 of us, and that was the last tour of the day. These days, they take you through the C-class final assembly line and it takes about an hour. That's where I figured out that the US cars don't get warning triangles in the trunk, so obviously they make US C-classes at Sindelfingen also. One of the German tour guests asked about a red car that he saw on the line, and the tourguide said those are for the US market. Come to think of it, I don't remember seeing a red MB anywhere in Germany.
I also did the same tour in 1998 and back then it was the E-class line and also included the stamping plant. Today it's only the C-class final assy line.

Factories
If time allows, the Porsche factory and the new Porsche museum are in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen, NE of downtown a short distance.

It was that way in 1998 when I was there, but last month it was on foot only. And the path of the tour goes up stairs and along an elevated walkway spanning the width of the assembly hall which gives a good overview of the process. They use MB tour busses to take visitors from the Kundencenter to the assembly buildings.

Live in Germany and ordered a U.S. spec Merc. MB told me that they are made in Sindelfingen. I figured I should buy one before they move all production to Alabama.

About 80 percent of the Cs in the U.S. are South Africa now.
The rest are Bremen. It's all in the VIN number.
Cs are made Sindelfingen, but they don't ship those to the U.S.
All SLKs for the U.S. are also built in Bremen, same with GLKs. See the relationship? Bremen is very into making these related cars.

Maybe it was like that in the past, but I definitely saw US cars on the line at Sindelfingen last month. They're easy to spot: different license plate cutout in the trunk, no lic bracket in front, and no warning triangle in the trunk. When you look on EPC Net, you'll see that there's a US delete option code for the triangle. And US cars all seem to have drilled front rotors, at least what I noticed.

Its actually unbelievable how many factories/office buildings/complexes are here in southern Germany. Everywhere you look in Stuttgart and Singen you can see huge Benz stars spinning above buildings.
