gear changes
I found the 7G gearbox has the tendency to select the "lower" gear when I am pressing too little throttle while cruising at medium speed.
while manual upshifting is prohibited by the ECU.
one can feel that the lower gears selected by the ECU is in fact slowing the car down instead of rolling freely forward with the momentum.

I am talking about comfort mode. and I suspect the tendency of picking the lower possible gears will use up more gas.
and that's my concern.
anyway to reprogram the shifting pattern?

y would u go want to go higher gear than the engine is designed to go at, ur gonna create knock and the fact u have to press harder to get it going at low rev is not gonna save u fuel.
if u r cruising at constant speed it wont change gear, it is unless u want to accelerate, so if u want to save fuel, cruise at constant speed

Free wheel
The 1956 British Rover 90 had a "Free Wheel" knob on the dashboard which when activated allowed the car to freewheel with no engine braking. It also became clutchless in this mode.
Maybe you should suggest this 54 year old mod to MB management.

If I can follow you, you are actually complaining about too heavy engine braking. In my opinion this design is preferable over the option to run the engine with the highest possible gear even when slowing down. The point is that this allows you to control the speed with your gas pedal, no need to lift the foot and use brakes (majority of driving scenarios, of course brakes are still needed at times). If you don't want the car to slow down. don't lift the gas pedal completely.
