Engine Noise When Turning Engine Off?

Everytime I turn off my C300, the engine makes an awful noise just before the engine cuts out. Sounds like the engine is about to fall apart. If I had to describe it, it sounds like....shudder, shudder, shudder.

Has anyone else experienced this type of noise when turning off their engine?

Hard to say from your description. Is is more of a metalic banging or just a shudder of the engine in the mounts.

I don't know, it just sounds like the engine "putters" slightly just before it stops turning. I don't know if it has anything to do with the mounts, but it just sounds weird.

Even my manual transmission makes a "rattling" noise in lower gear sometimes....happens mostly when I'm in 1st gear and depress/let go of the clutch at slow speed. Almost like something is loose in there.

Maybe all this is normal with a Mercedes, but I just haven't heard these types of sounds on any other car I've owned in the past. The car is brand new with less than 200 miles so far.

Try shutting down with the clutch depressed which will eliminate the transmission from suspicion. This could be a motor mount. In general, odd noises from anywhere are not normal and bear investigation and not a brush-off which is a favorite technique of service writers.

As far as rattle from the gearbox is concerned, as a percentage MB builds very few cars with manual boxes and they have never been the operating equal of the other manufacturers. Magazine road testers have always complained about their notchy operation clear back to the eighties. Sort of like a broomstick in a bucket of rocks.

I'll try shutting down the car with the clutch depressed tomorrow. I'll check the mounts as well.

I know MB builds very few manuals for the US, but I'm sure they build more manuals for other markets outside the US.

These noises just don't seem normal for a $30K+ car.

Well, it definately sounds like it's coming from the transmission/clutch area. When I press and let go of the clutch in 1st or reverse gear, there is a knocking/rattling sound I hear, this is the same sound I hear when I shut the engine off. Sounds like something is loose somewhere.
