Not exactly the idea, but you theoretically use the cone air filters in the engine compartment, but in the OEM baffle boxes use a thermal fin like the radiator uses that is cooled to attempt to lower the air temperature and it would be more practical than trying to fit the cones in front of the radiator and channeling the airflow around the engine compartment. Again, I just fail to see how this is an improvement over high flow filters in the OEM box.

I still think the best design would be to have a y pipe coming out of the intake manifold(sorry if that's not the proper name) and just have an intake pipe running from the back of the motor(1 on each side) with 2 cone filters sitting rite behind the grille(even rite above it) this eliminates the air box and gives the outside air a more direct(ram air) straight to the motor.. The hard part is fabricating a ypipe that is short enough to fit under the hood(custom fabricating needed) and for any1 questioning cone filters and how they suck in warm air.. Look at my profile pics and check out my short air intake.. The cone filters have an aluminum shield that goes around the whole circumference of the cone.. I agree with you mike about the location of the cones, but I feel like we need a more direct route to the motor for air to flow.. I don't have a pic but freind has the stillin intake on his G37 and its exactly the design I'm thinking of..only difference is he has 2 separate holes for the pipes to run not a 2-1 design..

VERY small increase...it's not something you'll be able to notice at all. Those CAIs claim hp increases but all they really do is change the sound

yeah, not gonna even pretend to increase performance here, just want to maintain current level of performance. We're mainly talking about sound aesthetics and visual aesthetics when popping open the hood without looking like a half assed bolt on.

Using a Y-pipe is sub-optimal, and that's a polite way to describe it. According to Bernolli's principle, your pressure would decrease as it approached the intake manifold. You want both high pressure and high volume and the only way to achieve that is to maintain as straight and even channel as possible. Another reason why bending it around the engine compartment is a bad idea.

I agree with the straight thru design.. But what I had in mind only has a bend towards the back of the motor.. Regardless it was just a thought. I already have an intake

hey Mike, i just took a look at the car and there is no room for u to run a tube or scoop to the engine compartment cuz the radiator block all the way up form top to bottom. but i have an idea that run the scoop behind the grill and mod the plastic piece on top of the grill. and use a similar style of the intake like the pic u posted.

Yeah, I know, that's why I mentioned considering a new radiator design

Instead of the radiator redesign and what not, how about redesigning the intake for a shaker scoop?

EDIT: Bonus if you add zoomies for the exhaust.
