How do I remove the ashtray to access back of cigarette lighter?

It isn't very simple to describe which parts should be removed and how. You should download the instructions from Startekinfo, assuming you are from the US (not from Munich, Europeans have to use a different site, and pay more).

yeah its easy you need to take the shifter covers off the leather part than the plastic part off
than take the cover on the ash tray the big sliding cover off. you should see two screws near the edges where you removed the shifter covers. unscrew and done you can take your ashtray out
