Calibration of Engine Performance at Mercedes-AMG
Hi Everyone:
I thought I would pass this article along on the process with which Daimler calibrates their engines. This will give you a little flavor of how things are done at the OEM level.

Essentially, the software is a large optimization algorithm (Design of Experiments or DOE), where the engineer can optimize for any variable on the engine.
For example, the engineer can optimize for fuel efficiency (increase MPG) while varying all other variables. Or, you can optimize for torque, again varying all other variables. The multi-dimensional graph that you see is a visitation of one of these optimization runs around a specific variable. This is what is communally referred to as a “fuel map” and its out-put will be pulled into a table-like format and then downloaded onto the engine controller for different calibration studies.
Enjoy!
