Manual Shifting in the 350
I always hear people complaining about the slow shift speed in the autos. Anyone with AAP feel that way when its in Manual. The shifts are INSTANT!

Or as fast as the SMG III in the e46 M3s. I love those lol. But I also haven't driven the DSGs or DCTs. Is M mode "slow" though? That what I was asking because it seems so quick to me. I hit the paddle and there is no lag.

hmm i guess if you compare with M mode off, its quick
but if you compare to sequential, its slow
I have no complains really, as long as the gearbox is strong enough for me to last til the very end of my ownership and dont give me trouble, knowing that the AMGs is using the same unit for those 450bhp machines really gives me a peace of mind

When I first saw the name of this thread, I got very interested very quickly, but now I see you are just a bunch of automatics playing with your thumbs!

Actually there are two 7G transmissions - one for up to 400 nm of torque (for use in the C300 and C350, GLK, E350), and the industrial strength 800 nm unit, for the E550, C63, S550, etc. The more robust unit isnt the last word though - the new S63 is capable of close to 900 nm of torque, therefore the engine is "torque limited" to a little over 800 nm in order to not tear up the transmission with such a heavy vehicle. Maybe in the next model go-around, when hopefully the 3.5L engine starts producing proper HP (read FI), the 7G will up the ante to 8 speeds, and 500 nm or 1000 nm respectively.

The 400 Nm and 800 Nm have similar design parameters, but different operative priorities. For instance the 800 Nm version is built more with manual shifting in mind, on the 400 Nm its almost an afterthought. That said, remember that the C300 only churns out 300 Nm of torque, while the C350 is... (wait for it)... 350 Nm of torque. Well within the conservative design parameters. Why pay more and carry more weight? However, be advised to treat this 7G beast gently, repairing or replacing, for instance, the valve section (a defect on early 08 C class) is extremely complicated and costly, as the new section has to be "married" to the old disk, gear section, and ECU. There are actually 6 electronic boxes feeding info into the TCU every time you shift. So educate your TCU well, get the latest TCU flash from the dealer at the next service, and reset the accelerator pedal when you feel the car sluggish (personally I like the half-way-down trick instead of the full-to-the-floor method, in many threads on this site). Gently, treat the 7G gently. Like the farmer teaching a city boy how to treat his burro. "Gently, gently" the farmer said. Then he picked up a huge stick and clobbered the poor animal on the head. The boy exclaims "What are you doing? You said to treat the burro gently!". The farmer replies "Yes, of course, son. You just have to get its attention first!".

The 7G in the AMG models uses a dual-clutch transmission, which is completely different than the non-AMG transmission and will always shift faster. I'm pretty sure the higher rated non-AMG transmission is a 5 speed and not a 7 speed.

I have 7 gears...In Manual mode I can freely shift from 1 2 3 4 5 6 or 7. I will take a pic tonight.

Looks like manual mode shifts at 100ms. And all 7Gs are rated up to 735 Nm though the AMG does use MCT and non AMGs use torque converters.
