One wonders if this "octane mentality" extends to brakes, tires, oil, service, etc. I for one would not like to ride in a W204 with brake pads replaced with the "low octane" version.

You are right! We both have 2008 models. My Infinity does have 3 more hp. (317/320 hp). The difference of 3 HP is from the use of 87 octane VS 91 octane. So that's definitely worth the extra .30 cents per gallon I spend on 91 octane. We even get the same gas mileage. You know what I just talked myself into using 87 octane in my QX-56. Thanks guys for this informative, childish rant over what octane to use.

So what was the purpose of posting about the "identical" engines when you already knew there was indeed a difference between them??

No mechanic for sure

I definitely feel the difference between regular and premium, and sometimes I can feel the difference between fill-ups of gas brands. Heck, I can even notice a difference at my next fillup at the same station.

Also, it doesn't help that the one time I put regular in my c300 and went to start it, the engine misfired and the cel was blinking. I had to turn it off and turn it back on and all was fine. But apparently accoding to my service advisor this can happen where the pistons and the crank become out of sync. He seemed to think that the knock sensors or the misfire from regular gas has caused this. But I'm no mechanic.
You posted this theory about the pistons and the crankshaft getting "out of sync" before and I went after you then about it. And here you are again with this crackpot statement.

You really have no idea how internal combustion engines work, do you?

Three more hp than what? I'm sure I missed something here. Since current V-6 C-Classes have either 228 or 268 hp, the numbers 317/320 seem to be off topic.

He is talking about the Nissan Armada and Infinity QX-56, with the Infinity having 3 more hp than the Nissan. You probably missed the post that was made before.

Haha, you have been really crabby lately. I know the basics on how an internal combustion engine works, I just don't know names for a lot of the engine components. I know that the crankshaft is connected to the pistons, but I was simply relaying what my service advisor told me. I figured he would know more then me, even though I didn't think it made sense. But the bottom line is, I put in regular gas ONCE and got an engine misfire that one time on startup. The CEL was blinking and the problem didn't get fixed until I turned off the engine and restarted. Then all was fine.

my previous car stalled after going from years of 91 to just a couple tanks of 89 during summer months. died on the freeway and took a couple cranks to get it off...

Getting back on the octane point... The compression of the 2012 C350 engine is 12.2:1. Turns out 302 HP and has improved torque.
It is doubtful that the ECU, oxygen sensors and crank timing will allow the use of any gasoline below 91 octane.

The 2012 is direct injection though which the previous C350s weren't

http://www.benzworld.org/forums/w204...injection.html

these systems are a lot more tolerant to knock that just a knock sensor with the ignition (this just retards the timing a bit), the timing of each injector firing directly into each cylinder can be controlled to get detonation back under control. Our 2007 VW GTI (also DI) had 10.3 to 1 before the boost even kicked in and people regularly up the boost on these cars without issues on pump gas.

Op if your concerned about being cheaper on gas especially since your in a c300 just run e85 easy discussion over... other then that the reg vs premium fuel is a debate that will never end.. cause alot of times you really never know what fuel your running anyways... who knows is the 93 oct is actually that... some gas station owners i know say theres no difference and some just use reg for all 3 grades.. and some say there is a little difference and then you have sunco and they differently say theres a difference.. i'm just glad i can use e85... saving alot of money doing so...

btw not to thread jack but what makes a engine e85 capable??

Nothing really different about the engine itself, I converted a regular lawnmower to ethanol. Ethanol (alcohol) tends to dry out regular rubber fuel hoses, so special fuel lines are needed on the car (the C300 has this but the C350 doesn't I'm told). The other thing is the ECU will have to compensate for the difference in readings at the oxygen sensors, e85 tends to lean out the mixture so more fuel needs to be injected to compensate.

Every single part that contacts the E85 is different including the fuel tanks. Every gasket and O-ring. The injectors and ECU. And the only E85 model is the C300 Automatic.

I avoid E10 and the closest E85 pump is a 60 mile roundtrip.

We have been through this many times.

C350 Elegance
I'm a real rebel and I follow manufacturer's recommendations to the letter: 91 octane gas (super) for the C350, 100% synthetic motor oil and ATF, 50% antifreeze solution in destilled water, OEM or OEM's supplier filters, brake fluid, pads and rotors, OEM or equal, not equivalent functional parts, gel battery, plus plenty of home made TLC.

If the manufacturer recommends it, why not follow it after I bury a high sum in their product?
