Yes, a common problem. It seems to be sprouting up on a bunch of 2008's lately... I hope that time doesn't prove this to be a widespread problem... This is getting a bit ridiculous though, I hope MB does the right thing and issues a recall or replaces this for free for people who have this issue...

damn.. this happens to me like once or twice a month... i put the key in the ignition and turn and nothing happens.... I have to take the key out and do it again and then it works... I doubt MB will cover it now.. Especially mine since now they are being owned by AutoNation... they suck ***

Near Sandy hook, I got my care back today cost $700.00 for the ignition and also had the steering link bushings replaced at 115,000 miles.

Remove & Install Electronic Steering Lock on C200 W204
Hi from DownUnder,
Does any one have a procedure to Remove & Install the Electronic Steering Lock on C200 W204?
Apparently a common fail problem. The car has no signs of life once ignition switched on - battery fine.
Any help much appreciated.
Cheers,
Graham

I have a 2008 C300 Sport 4Matic w/ 30K on it that just died yesterday. PLEASE HELP.
The Problem seems to be the EIS. When i put the key in the ignition that command that i get is "remove key from ignition" on the dash. I order a 2nd Key yesterday from my local MB dealership. When I put the key in the ignition i hear no sound from the ignition lock. The steering column is not locked. The lights, windows and radio work. The battery is one year old and has a full charge..
There seems to be very little info on how do do the repair DYI. The tech at the MB parts department stated that the part EIS &/or ESL (electronic Ignition Switch, Electronic Steering Lock) Part #207-905-72-01 is $510 and requires a Blue Key Part # 905-00-39-9999 $260.75 needs to be order also BUT, will be credited after the work is done. It must have to do with coding the new part.
I would love to have a video of how to take the dash apart but, think that this problem is really only fixable by a MB Tech. Does anyone have the name or number of a mobile MB tech for the fix. I hate the idea of having to flatbed the car 1/2 mile to a local dealer and getting completely raped on the repair.
I live in East End of Long Island on the South Fork. PLEASE HELP.
