Does an overheated ballast need to be replaced or just cooled down?
Good evening. Ok I've had my car for one month now and learned a TON from searching and the great DIYS here. I've never installed or attempted to do anything myself til I came here.
Ok with that out the way I recently purchased a set of ddm's and had them installed (professionally) about a week-week and a half ago and today I received the error message "check low left beam" so I got out and looked and it's off. (the headlight)
Checked all connections and they all seem secure and in place. So I came here and searched and found a few threads about possibly overheating. No solid answers but only possibilities.
So I'm wondering/guessing that can b the only problem given that the HIDS are only about 2 weeks old. So if it is can the ballast cool off and actually work again? Bcuz if not I'll have to ride around for days until I order a replacement, and that'll SUCK!!!

No sir I did not, I was going to try that first thing in the am. I was trying to give ddm the benefit of the doubt, that I wouldn't have a bad bulb after about only 2 wks of installation. But I guess you can't rule anything out.

Ok, I've just checked the lights again since I'm at work and the car has been sitting for a while now, and they're ON. So I guess it actually was an overheating problem that caused them to maybe power off to avoid further damage? I will still have my installer (shop) take a look at wiring and connections later on in the day.
If overheating is in fact my problem is there any steps i can take to prevent it from happening again in the future? I've read About wrapping it in foam or something of the sort but there were no deep details on it.

Thanx for the tip. Luckily it hasn't happened since that day. I have an appt to have them checked and the ballast (driver side) repositioned 2mrw just to be on the safe side.
