Diesel tuning
Hi diesel fans,
Any of you had your ECUs remapped or "chipped"? Have see more or less nothing on this issue, probably due to the lack of diesel models in the USA where most of you are. Still its a valid topic in many other parts of the world so what have you done / experienced? I'm about to get my C220 (factory 170 bhp / 295 ft/lbs torque) remapped so will post results when done. Brabus has a whole selection of chips that give substantial increases in performance for CDI engines.

Diesel tune.
I'm going for a remap (flash) of the on-board computer. This does not require any opening up of ECUs - its done through the OBCD port that the dealer uses to analyse the vehicle's electronics.
My view is that this is much better than a "tuning box" that just plugs into the common rail fuel injection system and merely delivers more fuel. The remap adjusts many parameters and can be fine tuned for power and torque delivery at different points in the rev range. It takes the 2.2 CDI engine from 168bhp up to 212bhp and from 295lbft torque up to 364lbft torque. The company, Celtic Tuning, have a good reputation in the UK market, and they say that this keeps within safe design tolerances of the engine and drive train components. I'd like to do a rolling road before and after but they are too far away to travel to. The software has been developed using a Dastek 750 rolling road which ensures performance accuracy, reliability and also that the vehicle is compliant for emissions testing. Also expect to see a 2-5mpg fuel economy improvement once remapped but dependent on driving style! If you use the performance see the mileage drop! The max torque comes in a little later but still has my maximum at 2000 rpm. The max power comes in earlier than mine.Impressive. I have an auto - Celtic are cool with either. The cost is £400 incl VAT and for that they travel from their HQ to the vehicle location. Don't expect that would include Australia or even non-mainland UK!!!! Will keep you posted. :y |
The highway speed limit here is 100 & 110 km /hour . That is around 2000rpm for my car with auto transmission . Looking at the HP /Torque curves of before & after there is not a great deal of difference in the figures . Approx 6 more Nm & 4 KW.
So under my conditions I would not expect to see a great deal of difference until I started to accellerate & overtake & drive enthusiastically! Your motorways are faster than ours so you should see a more marked difference. I am looking forward to hearing how the drivability changes with your auto & about the improvement in fuel economy. What is involved if you happen to wish to revert to original mapping ? |
When I bought my car C220 cdi sport it already had the Brabus power box fitted and it doe's fly,incredible torque,get around 40+mpg when driving local and 55+mpg on the motorway.Only bad thing is the price.

That sounds like a great improvement for the car! I own my 220CDI for almost 2 months now and I'm considering a remapping in the future, so please do tell us about how the car perform after the mod was done!

Diesel tune
The reason I'm going for the remap is the overall improvement in driveability that you get from it.
My car is pretty good overall and quite a flier, but it is quite sluggish away from rest (drive by wire accelerator software possibly or maybe even auto g/box software) and when a sudden demand for extra go is wanted it takes a couple of seconds to react. Others tell me that the remap addresses this issue. Setting it back to stock is a simple flash of the memory in the ECU and the company do it for a nominal charge, apparently. |
I agree about the reaction time. We have to anticipate big time on small roundabouts !!My old 1980 3 speed Borg Warner 35 reacts much quicker.

Cant believe the diesel price is similar to 91 RON petrol here in AUS these days...
I think if I spend the same amount of $, I will get half of the mileage :( Cant wait for the C250 CDI Coupe to arrive here. |
I know right, you should see the differences in New Zealand, the gap between diesel and petrol are like 50~90c/L, with diesel being the cheapest! but that's in New Zealand $ ofcourse
