Arrow Retrofitting a c63 amg limited slip differential to a w204 non-AMG

Is it possible to retrofit a c63 amg limited slip differential to a w204 non-AMG? (c350, c300, c280 c250, c230 c200, c180 etc).

Any ideas?

I am asking because I was offered one very cheaply.

Of course it is, anything is possible if you throw enough money at it. Chances are though it will be easier and probably less money to just put in an aftermarket limited slip.

I am not familiar with the specific features of the diff in question though, if it's one of these newfangled electronic differentials then it would probably be pretty complicated though since you would need what ever controls it as well. You may be able to just wire it to a switch for On-Off operation, but that would be kind of dumb in my opinion.
If it's a standard limited slip unit like a torsen or something, and there is nothing available that will fit in your current rear end, then it would probably be fairly simple to replace the entire axle.
In most cases parts are fairly interchangeable across their particular platform to make manufacturing easier, but this is a Mercedes-Benz and they can afford to make each one different if they wanted so I can't be sure. I haven't looked that closely at mine, or any others.

That is probably a bad idea, or at least a waste of money.

When you say "lock the differential" are you talking about a selectable locker like you would find on a truck, or just welding the spider gears together? (or something like that)

I don't know if there are any lockers available that would even fit or work, I've certainly never looked for one for a car before. But assuming there is and you felt it was worth the money it would only work while you are driving in a straight line. You would have to turn it on when you want it, which means planning ahead, you couldn't just leave it on all the time, and in real life it would be useless the majority of the time.

If you're just talking about a spool of some sort then both axles are mechanically connected all the time and you no longer have a differential. When you turn one tire rotates at a different speed then the other and it would no longer be able to do that so it would literally drag the tire through the turns. This would make the car quite unpleasant to drive and unpredictable as well. It would spin out easily on anything but a dry road and cause some wicked tire wear. (this would be the same with a locker while it is on)

It's also the same amount of work to put in, it's just cheaper if you weld the gears since you wouldn't need any parts... But it's a bad idea.

As for the OP, why do you want a limited slip in the first place? Is there something specific you're hoping to gain by adding one?

You just don't run a locker on the street, period.

Well that's not nessasarily true, a selectable locker would be fine. When it's off it's not there, and it's only on when you want it, you could get something like a tru-track which works ok on the street but that's why I wanted to know the the original posters intentions because these cars don't have enough power to really benefit or need a limited slip anyway
