Cops finally put the kabash on my tints :(
Has anyone ever had to remove tints on their car?
I've skated by for a year now with my tints (15% all around plus 60% on windshield). Its too bad, since my car looks so great all black...
I'm wondering if the cost of removing the tint is close to equivalent to the fix-it ticket price ($252)
It cost me around $250 to tint the whole thing, Technically I only need to remove the tint from the windshield and reduce the tint on the front windows.. sounds expensive.
I'm actually thinking about selling the car and getting into another one that is under warranty, like a 2010 or something as my car is a couple weeks away from hitting 50k.
I'm thinking it might be cheaper to just pay the ticket and then sell the car, let the next guy decide whether dark tint is right for him.
Hmmm.... what do, what do...

Bummer. Since you're already seriously considering moving on, I'd leave it.
That's why I'm going to keep it at 35% soon. Word on the Westside is that Wash. Co. Sherrifs and Beaverton PD are sticklers for legal tint. I'm already skating by w/ no front plate, so I best not try my luck w/ <35% tint.

If you're careful, you can remove it yourself. Ammonia and a razor blade. There are plenty of DIY posted on this. Also, it should be pretty cheap to remove from the tint shop....I wouldn't pay more than $30-40

It took me 1hr to fully take my tints off with a razor blade...leave the car in the sun and just rip away. Pull at a 180 degree angle if that makes sense...it will just peel away from the window.

it's BS. Holes or not the law requires front plates. If you tell your dealer to not have holes drilled when ordering the car they sometimes make you sign off stating you requested it so the dealership holds no liability.
I just got pulled over for tinted windows as well. Good to have friends that are cops to help me sign off the ticket.

This is what you have to watch out for. If you just try peeling with heat alone, it's hard to peel off all of it at once. Window tint material has layers to it and if it seperates as you peel, it's a PITA to clean up. That's why I suggest ammonia which will work towards chemically loosening the hold through the pore and allow you to peel it off as one piece.

For the left over adhesive and tint strips, you can use more ammonia spray as Mike suggested and scrub the windshield with super fine steel wool pads (or those green scrubbing pads if steel wool is not available at home).
And of course cover all interior surfaces with trash bags so you don't get any ammonia on anything.

Makes me nervous about tinting my car driver and passenger windows here in CA. I talked to the tint guus here and they said Llumar 50% light ceramic tint would look nice and give good heat reflection. I might do 35% but still on the fence.
I had 15% on my old 911 that I brought over from Arizona. I was probably pulled over four times and never got a tint ticket but did get plate, and as you would guess, speeding....

Starting to really think whether I've pushed my luck to the limits now. Thinking of getting a Swift Motorsports hidden bracket (manual, not motorized). The ones that use the tow hook spot just look off to me with the plate on the side.

ive actually been pulled over a few times for tints. The first and second time, they let me off with a warning. Unfortunately the third time i was driving in a HOV lane where cops need to see if you have 3 or more people in your car. guess it bothered him and he gave me a fix it ticket, luckily with NO FINE.
I just simply ask the tint shop if they could remove them one day and put the same shade of tint for the same amount which was priced at 250 on another day.
A few months later, i was actually pulled over one more time. The cop let me off as well but he suggested if i dont like getting pulled over, i should probably get the tints removed and a front licenses plate holder.
My opinion on your tints, if you're thinking about selling the car. You should definitely remove them because illegal tints aren't going to help sell the car, it'll only going to give more reason to sell less.

So are both tickets fix-it, i.e. if you get them signed off/fixed, they get dismissed?

That sucks, dude! Cops can be somewhat simpleminded, sometimes. I know, I'm friends with three of them. And thats quoting one of their wives, too... Have you ever seen the tint on their cars BTW - it's bull. Very ticky-tac I'd say. Thankfuly we don't have that problem here in Florida. Or front plates either to ugly up the bumper. Gov and cops can all KMA!!! Good luck...
