Dealer Uses M1 ESP (Diesel) For All MB Cars .. All US Too?
I talked to the local MB parts guy that orders the oil for the big 150 gal tanks. He said they no longer fill them with M1 Formula M 5W-40 "gas engine only" oil, but instead now use 229.51 M1 ESP Formula M "diesel and gas engine" oil to fill the tanks, and use it for both modern diesel and gas engines:
M1 ESP Formula M 5W-40 was diesel eng only
M1 Formula M 5W-40 was gas'ine eng only
I just talked to a local service rep, who until recently was a long time tech there. He agreed about 229.51 for all now.
History: He also said pre '97, 15W-40 diesel/gas oil was used for all (Audi had same policy, but I provided summer and winter versions of same oil). After '97, M1 0W40 was used for both, one oil for gas and diesel engines.
Mobil 1 0W-40
Then when MB started selling BlueTec low emmision diesel engines around 2008, they used two different 5W-40 oils, the ESP for Diesel only. About a year ago, my local dealer converged both engines to use the M1 5W-40 ESP oil. ---- I'm not sure if it's a new MB USA policy. The MB Fluids chart still suggests two different oils to be used, 229.5 for gas eng's, 229.51 for diesels.
Glyn's comment over at W203 "Definitive Oil ..."
"Mobil M1 ESP Formula M 5W-40 is not approved for any Benz gasoline engine. US dealers & MBUSA quite often do their own thing. Cost them with the 722.9 filled for life recommendation (ATX). Their change once at 39K miles is also flawed. Change every 39K is correct."
