Factory CD Player not reading cd in 2008 C300

Hi All,

The factory unit CD Player in my 2008 C300W Sport suddenly stop reading any type of cd insterted into in, it gives the error message "disc unreadable". I did not drive over any potholes or exceed the g-shock limit of the unit. Anyone has any ideas/solution to resolve this issue?

Thanks,

I have the same problem. My CD player suddenly stopped playing without any unusual event happening. I think this is a defect that MB needs to address. CD player in my Nissan Sentra did not fail for the 10 years that I drove it. My dealer tells me it will cost $2,500 to replace the CD player.

If you need i'll sell you one - 6CDs player for $500. It's almost brand new, was removed from my new car 2011.

Mine did the same thing. It turned out the CD's needed cleaned. The head is very sensitive, and will not read a CD if it has finger prints or and dust on it. I cleaned CD's and now it works great.

I had the same problem. now every time you start the car, it grinds for a minute before it stops as it thinks it has a disc but the changer is empty. very annoying. guess have to wait to either fix it or replace a new head unit. sucks.

The laser-tracking mechanism in most mobile CD players is suspended by two or more rubber O rings (like tiny rubber bands) to better absorb road shocks. With exposure to high heat/humidity these O rings deteriorate over time and can be a cause of failure to read CDs.

Another is dust or lack of lubricant on the screw-servo mechanism that positions the lens.

These, in addition to some of the causes already mentioned above: a dirty laser lens, dirty CDs (or poor performance of an RCD/RWCD). It would be very unusual for the LED laser diode itself to fail, these have a mean failure life of 50,000 hours or more.

Prevention is limited to shaded parking or using a front windscreen sun shield. Leaving windows open a bit only invites more dust into the interior and CD mechanism.

Repair is difficult and results not guaranteed, outright new replacement of the headunit is expensive, and buying a used one that may shortly fail is just gambling.

Alternatives are using an MP3 player or an iPod, however original AIWW CD-source quality can only be achieved with an iPod playing Apple Lossless former tunes. As for streaming, I was just gifted a Bovee ViseeO Tune2air and a Spotify Premium subscription. I will be reporting in a separate thread a review of this interesting unit, also an evaluation of the Burmester audio option available for the new W205, GLC, E & S Class. (In the GLC it is now a $850 stand-alone option).

Hi,
I was having the same issue in my 2008 C300 MBZ. A real downer because I am well out of warranty. Then I remembered there's a Reset option in the command. By doing this, just know that you will need to re-pair your phone and also format the time, but hopefully it fixes the 'unreadable disc' issue you were having. My CDs (store bought and burned) are all being read well once again. Hope it helps.

Edit: It worked only temporarily--I am back to square one. If anyone has any other suggestions out there, please don't leave us hanging.
