Swapping an '08 cluster with a '10.

I did a search and read some threads about the subject but I was wondering if anyone has done this.

I would like to get the tire pressure numbers to show up and have heard the clusters are plug and play. If you put a 2010 in an older car you can have this function.

Does anyone know if this will actually work? I plan on buying a cluster on Ebay if it is confirmed.

Thanks

Not so fast! Even if it is confirmed that the 2010 cluster will show TPMS pressures in an 08 model, you're missing a few crucial pieces of information:

1. You cannot swap a cluster unless it has less than 1,000 miles on it - otherwise it cannot be coded to your car, which brings us to .....
2. If you swap clusters you will have to go to the dealer in order to have the new cluster coded to work with your vehicle which now brings us to...
3. If you take your 08 vehicle and cluster as is to a willing dealer they can simply code it to enable TPMS on it (I'm 99% sure). Nearly every dealer is going to tell you that they cannot or will not do this.

U can swap out the cluster and it will kinda work. Your miles will be probably be blank or display error, never tried it without a CAN installed. The cluster is coded to the key box behind ur dash where u put the key. To do this yourself you will need a CAN blocker installed into this module. Not a DIY deal my friend. What country are you in?

This would make the car very hard to sell. Also, if the donor cluster has any settings / options turned off that your car has turned on, you will lose them too without version coding.

Coding is easy just get a Merc Indy to do it key and dash EEPROM will need to be programmed
I don't think dealer will do such a thing even if u buy a cluster from them

Yes if you can find a good indy with SDS it's no problem. But if he can do that he won't even need a new cluster though, just code TPMS on in the cluster. And it still holds true that a cluster with more than 1000 miles cannot be coded ever again to show mileage.

Could they code it so the actual pressure numbers show up? It does not give me the option now and the newer models I get for loaners have it displayed.

I guess a different cluster is out. My only shot is to find a person who can program it.

Thanks for the info

Sorry but this is not true I repair clusters for a living and have changed many w204 clusters over 1000 miles

I think what he meant is dealers wont touch a cluster over a 1000 miles, we all know (well some of us lol) that indy's can change any cluster's mileage, not hard to do. I dont think any dealer will do this unless you have a real connection, 0 miles or whatever miles. They are very hesitant to do this stuff cause when something goes wrong they own it afterwards, only if it was some type of warranty work and they are getting paid to do it.

To the original poster, you can have a CAN installed and then put whatever cluster u want in it, and u could also have the right person do the mileage to match so its on the up and up. U would have to make sure the cluster has at least your options, using the arrows may not work if the car didnt have full features, there may be menus missing.

I think the better way of doing what u want is just order a TPMS sensor kit w display. Mount in your car and it will show u the PSI on all tires, cheap and easy to do. Check tire rack and ebay, they have them. I know its not OEM but much cheaper, the other way your looking at big bucks

It's not that a dealer won't do it - it is that they cant. A cluster with more than 1000 miles cannot be coded through SDS to the actual mileage of the car that it is going into. It will still work, but it either shows "-----" for mileage or "99999" or similar. Another words, once the cluster shows over 1000 miles on it, it is 'locked'.

I am interested in hearing about how this is done though? You use third party tools I imagine. Those tools are 'hacking' things in one way or another, not that I'm complaining.
