Console COMMAND dial/knob

Hi guys. I'm new here and this is my first post.

I have the 2008 C300 4MATIC. The console knob that controls the COMMAND system is not scrolling when rotated. So basically it just goes up/down/left/right/in, but nothing happens when I rotate it.

Isn't it supposed to scroll? I saw a couple OLD threads in this forum, but none of them had a solution. Can somebody provide any kinda help?

Thanks!

you can change the knob out. u pull the shift boot off, pull up on the cover below, and then remove 2 screws and lift the whole plate up that covers cup holders and the knob. The knob has screws I think that are visible or it just pulls up and unplug it. get a replacement and your done. No real way of fixing it otherwise just live w it

I finally got to it... I was able to take the console apart and unscrew the knob however, I couldn't get to unplud the knob cable. It seems like it's routed through a small opening under the console to the front under the "shift area". If I unplug it, there is no way I can get the whole thing off... Am I missing something?

guys you go in thru the shift boot. pull that over and up and outta the way. there is a screw under the rubber "change" thing in the center console next to cup holders. then u pull up on that whole plate, u dont take the knob off, the whole plate comes off around the command knob. Once thats free theres 2 screws that hold the knob down, remove those and it comes up. The cable comes in thru the front of the console, you can reach in and help it if need be. It unplugs w a pressure tab, use a dental pick or something long+skinny it comes out. had mine out before not too hard if you r used to working on cars...

The knob comes w the control as a whole. I don't think u can remove the knob. If u wanna try it use a pulling tool. Ur local autoparts will have one if u don't. Just replace the whole assembly if its not working

What I ended up doing is the following:
1- I was able to take the console apart and remove the whole Switch Assembly.
2- I was able to unplug the Switch Assembly; However, it seems that it is stuck in a clip or something under the console housing. It is extremely hard to get to it to see what's going on under there because it's really tight.
3- My next plan is to cut the wires (since the Switch Assembly is crap anyway), and just install the new Switch assembly without routing the wires the way they used to be. What do you guys think?

To answer Illa's question: I have been told (and according to my research) that you can't change the silver knob alone, you need to change the entire assembly.
If your problem is the scrolling, some people suggested trying WD-40. Mine didn't work.

I dont remember offhand which side the wire connects to. If it connects at the car side you can just cut it. If it plugs into the knob assembly dont cut it. Yes you can reroute it, thats what I did. I notched the plastic to part and went in like that. I needed to notch it anyway for 2 wires that go to control knobs for my DSP and amplifier bass control that I mounted next to the shifter

had the same problem. My SA told me that I had to change the whole unit. But I believe they did this under warranty so i was in luck. It was such an annoying issue especially when inputting for the navigation and such. Hope you get yours fixed!

Mind if I ask where did you get your part from and how much?

Anyone know the part number or what MB calls it officially?

Hey all, just got this issue. I'm responding in a few threads to see a good response. Has anyone had a good dealer fix? Price? I really hate having something wrong with my car.
