Car startup

I just washed my C. I started and backed it to the driveway. Turn it off but left the key in the ignition, don't remember which position the key was at, maybe "1".

About 15 minutes later, wash was done. I started it, nothing, started it at "N", still nothing. I removed the key and inserted it back in, it started right up.

Is it a feature, or a bug?

Thanks.

Sounds like a reasonable "time out" setting for our cars but not really sure.

Thanks for the reply. I sent this exact message to the service advisor at the dealer where I bought the car, just to see what he would say.

New car has so much electronics that not everything is described in the manual. I have no clear idea what I have what I don't have...

It's normal. If you leave the key in the ignition in position 1 (electronics on but engine off) car will automatically put itself back into position 0 (electronics off engine off) after 10 or 15 minutes. This is to prevent the battery from draining if you indeed left the car like this unintentionally. If you are doing this on purpose because you are waiting for someone and want to have the seat heater on or maybe the radio its annoying when the car shuts itself off. But I'd rather have it this way then have my battery drain completely because I was being a numbskull.

You reminded me of my daily car, Infiniti QX4. If I leave the key in position 1 and door(s) open for 20 minutes, its interior light will turn off. That's the battery saver.

My dealer's explanation:

What you experienced is normal the car is designed to not start unless the key is taken out of the ignition and put back In. This is a safety feature built in to every Mercedes.
