Depending on the look you want to achieve you can install up to 20" safely while even being dropped on some lowering springs. Popular choices are usually in the 8.5 width fronts to 9.5/10 rear on either 18inches to 20inches diameter. You will need new tires when you increase diameter. You offset will determine where the wheel will sit in or out of your fender. A higher offset will bring your wheels in from the fenders. A lower offset will bring the wheel out towards the fender, usually giving you a flush look or a poke look with really low offsets. So offset is the distance from center of your wheel width to the back of your wheel hub. There are many sites that will help your calculate the wheel offset of any wheel. Good luck on your project. Wheel upgrade has to be one of the hardest, since there are so many choices/options. Pick a look YOU want, and go for it. Don't worry about others taste.

iSmoke, everything pnoyworx wrote pretty much narrows it down.
This picture explains offset somewhat.
