It is quick, larger in and out, you could fit 3 bodies in the trunk....if you had to...just sayin.

Can't find a "does not equal" sign, but....different segments, different purpose, different cars. If he had stayed in the premium entry segment, and bought from that company, he'd be driving an Audi A4. There are very limited bases for comparison, other than he moved on after trying a premium car. Good luck to him!
P.S. Remember, this guy from Jersey measures trunk size by human bodies! Don't upset him!

But why?.....
Surely not due to reliability cause its a Volkswagen. The interior is not nicer. And definitely can't be because of gas prices because the amount of money you spent to get the 2012 Passat would surely offset any gas savings. The exterior looks far worse and the car doesn't carry the same prestige as a Mercedes.
I can't think of a logical reason why you would do this?
Not trying to bash you TS, but can you tell us why?

Want another one which I bet is showing up on some people's radar? Roughly comparable Jetta GLI (the "good" one, not the undersirable base engine/suspension/interior, etc) is about $13 grand less than a C250. For folks here for the driving and not the status, this could also be a consideration.

While we're waiting, if he even ever still checks in, let me take a shot in the dark. After 4 years with his 2008 model, he may be up for something new and likes the general feel of German engineering. Passat diesel, plus sunroof and nav versus C350 with sunroof and nav is separated by about $15,000 at MSRP. C350 is closest match for performance. For a lot of people, 15 grand is a big difference (not considering discounts, incentives, negotiation, etc for either car).

Whatever floats your boat TS.

I like a lot of what VW has to offer, especially the diesel, but the front wheel drive with maxed out torque is a deal breaker for me. Yes, it's fast(er), but it's so uncivilized, pedestrian, and almost "crude" which I just don't find appealing.

Completely agree with this statement...
I'm a car snob, but c'mon JamesKim. Such generic and far-reaching comments about reliability, "class", and downgrade? You're a marketing person's dream.
You insinuate that he couldn't have moved to the VW because of the reliablity. Would you say the same if he went to an Audi w/ the exact same TDi engine?
I obviously enjoy my MB and made the decision based on many factors, but you know what gnaws at me the most? The fact that such a "prestigious" car basically didn't offer leather. That and the fact that my car doesn't have friggin' folding rear seats! Had to live with that very annoying fact because having a 6MT was my number one criteria.
Life is full of choices and different situations. To honestly wonder why someone else made a car purchase decision based on your questions is absurd.
ps once the top tuners come out with a chip for his car... watch out; TDi engines get monster torque relatively easy.

Congrats, I have a C300 and Passat CC..
Both are great German Cars, like some people have said if it was an Audi with the same engine it would be ok. My CC engine (2.0T) and gearbox (DSG) are way better than what Mercedes offers (also 14k cheaper). Still Merc handles better, interior feels better, and is better at many other things.
There are many reasons he would make the switch and to be honest the interior might be nicer in the new Passat than the 2008 C-Class. (personal opinion though, manly for the feel off it as I drove both).
The reason we went for a 2012 and not CPO was mainly due to updated interior.

MB W204/W212, BMW E66, Porsche 958, VW MK6 TDI, Maserati Ghibli SQ4
Top tuners (Unitronics, APR, Revo Tecknik, Malone) already have tunes for the new TDI engines. Currently having both a C300 and a Golf TDI, quality on the C is much better, but the TDI is more fun to throw around with her tuned high torque. Wrong wheel drive kinda sucks, but hitting a personal best of 52 MPG and currently with diesel prices 10 cents cheaper than regular makes it a great commuter car.

Yes, I would never touch an Audi. It's a glorified Volkswagen with the problems that come with it.

Sorry but I don't agree with you. I've had 2 VW, one was a 2008 and the other 2010. They are still in the family. And never went to the dealer for a problem. I can't say the same for my 2012 C300.
VW/Audi have really stepped up on their quality since maybe 2005. Think Vw had most of their issues come from the Mexican assembly plant. That plant was is closed down now. They are more reliable then their reputation. At least they can use a dual clutch gearbox in 30k car and for 20 more Mercedes gives me a crappy slush box.
I still love the C300 and I hope it won't see the shop for a long time noew after some initial issues.
