usb not charging

i have a 2012 c class with nav and ipod integration bt i dont like to use the factory supplied cable cause i need to remove my case on my phone. so i use the apple factory supplied usb cable to 30 pin and plugged it into the usb in the center armrest. it was charging my phone for the first 3 weeks and poof now it doesnt. tried a diff cable. does the usb in our car not support charging and it was a fluke that i worked in the first place? or is something wrong? tried 2 diff cables and 2 diff iphones. one a 4 and other a 4s

That USB port is meant for data transfer like using a thumb drive to listen to music...of course it does supply power even if alittle. But I would imagine that it won't be able to handle charging a phone. That's why they sell car chargers that you can plug in to the cigarette lighter.

Likely the USB is putting out a threshold voltage that will occasionally charge the Iphone.

I have an Ipad that won't charge from a USB port on my computer, nor on some plug-ins, only on those made for it due to the voltage and amperage.
