Drive shaft / U-Joint help w/ C300 4Matic

Hi, can anyone tell me if the U-Joint on a 2008 Mercedes C300 4Matic Sport is serviceable? I had a VERY slight noise coming from the car and took it in to get it checked out and the shop said I have a cracked U-Joint. They told me that the drive shaft needs to be replaced and quoted me $1300+ just for the parts and that I can't even drive home on it. I was told by a mechanic in the family (who doesn't work on imports) that typically if a U-Joint is serviceable, you only need to replace the U-Joint itself.

Trying to figure out if the shop is just trying to get me to spend more than I need to or if the drive shaft legitimately needs replacing. The U-Joint was still intact and the drive shaft obviously hasn't fallen off or anything and it seems as though the U-Joint is just on it's way out. I have a loaner and they're supposed to start on the drive shaft tomorrow, should I have them hold off? Please help! I appreciate any feedback!

The U-Joint was cracked and it is welded onto the driveshaft. Unfortunately, the entire driveshaft needed to be replaced. The shop also put the O2 sensors on backwards and caused me to have to bring it in to another shop and spend another $600 for diagnostics. Evidently the U-Joint is a common thing to go wrong on this model year though, it's supposed to last 100k miles but breaks frequently around 60k from what I've heard. Hope this helps someone else out!
