A while back I received the official letter from Mercedes stating that there was a recall, but please wait until parts are ready. That was a few months ago and I haven't heard from MB again.

Last week, I went to my local dealer for an oil change and the service guy added the recall work to my sheet. Unfortunately, the tail lights on my car are aftermarket and the OEM ones were at home.

He told me that I could just bring the OEM lights into the shop and he would perform the recall.

All they did was replace the bulb carriers on both tail light assemblies. My wiring connecters were fine and were not replaced.

I compared old and new carriers and they look the same to me. (I got a free set of bulbs tho.)

The service guy had a recall instruction sheet but I couldn't see it.

Does anyone have that sheet?

Just scheduled ours to go in on Tuesday at the Wilmington, DE dealer. Free under recall.
Thanks for this thread, very helpful in helping solve the problem.

Does anybody know if there is any difference or redesign with the replacement bulb holder or wiring? If not then they are just kicking the can down the road and it will melt again eventually.

i don't think MB is stupid enough to issue a recall and replace it with the same (new) defective unit. sounds like a waste of money

Last I heard (see page 4), waiting on a parts list for all the items that will fix the issue. Among that is new circuit board. I haven't gotten another notification from MB in the mail, has anyone?

I just had this recall performed. I received the first letter and waited 3 months for a follow up letter on parts availability before I finally just called my dealer. They were aware and took care of it no problem.

I wouldn't wait. Just schedule an appointment.

I believe that the new bulb carrier is plated with a material that makes it compatible with the electrical connector that plugs into it. Although many refer to the original problem as a ground wire problem, it is really a connector problem.

Ours is back from the shop, they were pretty cold when I explained about my suspicion that this problem has affected other parts of the electrical system in the car. The technician's answer was that the tail lamp assembly is in its own circuit and should not interfere with other parts of the electric system, like the lights up front, etc.

It looks like all they replaced is the bulb carriers. As the previous commenter said, it appears to be a contact issue, probably due to the materials used?

However, now my left side tail lamps are staying on instead of my right ones... what gives?!

They don't replace the actual tail light so you wouldn't be able to see anything unless you open the trunk and the little compartment where the circuit is located

Currently at dealership... For the second time today. Brought in the car (2010 c300) after inspecting wiring harness and noticing the burned ground wire. They gave it back to me with only a changed bulb holder, but left faulty and burned wiring harness. Came back and argued for a good 20 mins with service manager because he said the recall only covered bulb holder and not wiring harness. Finally convinced him it's not exactly safe to drive around with a burned ground wire so he agreed to take it in. Waiting to see results.

Check if the bulb is seated properly or even replace it.

Reset the message (turn off car, pull key, then restart, etc) and see if message comes back.

They wanted me to replace my tail light because my led turn signal has failed. I think it is due to the wiring issue... So should be part of the recall or not?

If it was only a tail light bulb they would have replaced it as part of the recall because it is only $5? But since it is the led turn signal they want me to replace it for $350.

Anybody has the same experience with the led turn signal dying on them?

tail light recall

He compared it to a power outlet with too many power cords connected to it and burning out. He said that the lights need another ground that would correct the problem for now. Which it did!

He then went on to say that he looked up my vin # and said that mb will be calling me due to a recall on the "light holder" and to be on the look out or a letter from them.

Has anyone else had this issue? And is this recall for real? Any help is appreciated. Also where I can find any other related info.

Thank you!
I took my car in for the same repair. I was told that they had not received the necessary stuff to fix it. I am still waiting to be called back. This was in July of 2014. I read about it on the Yahoo sight. The service manager first said he need nothing about a recall. Then I gave him the recall info of the Yahoo sight. It was hard to deny a recall if it has may the web.

I just received my recall letter. Already had the service done a month ago. Call your service department and see if they have the parts in for the recall and set an appointment.

Maybe mine will come soon. I also need them to fix a cut place on my arm rest. I had the car detail recently and the guy pointed the cut out to me.

Did anybody get their money back if they paid to have the parts replaced by the dealer before recall?

I just had mine "fixed" while it was in for the yearly maintenance. It looks from my work order that they only replaced the bulb carrier. As others have noted, I certainly hope the new bulb carrier is updated or modified. I guess time will tell.

Another round of ICE
In case anyone else did what I did, and paid the dealer to have this done long before the recall was made official, the price now is fully refundable. Once I got the MBUSA letter, I contacted my dealer as instructed. They looked up the RO and within 10 days, I had a refund check for the full amount of $195.
