Balance shaft issue 272 273 engine?
I'm looking at buying a used 2010 c300 to replace c240 which was doing great until someone went through a stop sign. I have two friends who gave up on two different cars (E-class) with 272 engine due to the balance shaft problem.

Does anyone know if the 2010 C300, which does use the 272 engine, have this problem corrected?
Is it easy to look up the engine serial number range by the cars VIN?
Both have my friends went to the dealer with CEL on and were told it was the balance shaft and it would cost about $7K to fix. They gave up the cars, the dealer reset the CEL and the cars went to auction.

Sorry to link to a competitive website but they have the answer. I did find this bit of info that's good for me, since I'm looking for a 2010 or 2011. If you follow the link in the benzworld site it will lead to a huge consumer class action report which I have summarized below:
"cars were defective because the balance shaft gear had a tendency to wear out prematurely, causing the "check engine" light to illuminate and the car to misfire or stop running. Mercedes had issued a technical service bulletin about the problem in 2007, and it changed the design of its engine in 2009.
Mercedes moved to dismiss the lawsuit, and Judge Cavanaugh ultimately granted the motion.
Mercedes moved to dismiss the express warranty cause of action on the ground that the failures in plaintiffs' vehicles occurred outside of the 4-year/50,000 mile warranty. Plaintiffs argued that the "defect" was latent in the vehicle during the warranty period, but the court noted that "[c]ourts have consistently rejected claims that a latent defect was present in a vehicle from the date of manufacture, when that defect did not manifest itself until outside of the warranty period." Slip op. at 6 (citations omitted). "
