I take it you drive mostly city and in stop in go traffic?
Switch you tranny to "comfort" mode by pressing the c/s buttom next to the shifter. This will help the car shift at lower RPMs and start in 2nd gear.
Do you keep bricks in the trunk?

you are not using regular gas on your car right? I get close to 19mpg on city driving (heavy stop and go) and 24mpg on highway (average speed of 80mph). also check your tire pressures and see if your air filter is clean. If those are okay then you might just have a lead foot.
City driving only:
Premium gas Sports mode: 20-22 mpg for the week
Premium gas Comfort mode: 22-23 mpg for the week
89 gas Sports mode: 17-19 mpg for the week
89 gas Comfort mode 19-20 mpg for the week
I only put in Premium now and depends on my mood if it comfort or sport but now avg 22mpg and happy with it

No hard accelleration or hard braking.Feather the throttle !

Anticipate traffic, lights ect.
Clean your boot out.No extra weight.

Don't warm up your engine .. drive straight away .
Jack up each wheel in turn to check dragging brakes.
Use best quality fuel.
Have the car serviced regularly . Use MB perscribed oil & filters.
Good luck.
