I'm looking to update my C300 Comand APS maps to 2012 or 2013 (North America) and I'm wondering if I need to update the Comand firmware from the dealer first before I attempt to update the maps?

I read somwhere that I can't simply update old '09 maps to the latest maps without first updating the firmware of the Comand unit. Is this true?

I don't think that's true. I did it without a COMAND update. Ask your service advisor anyway just to be sure, but mine's fine.
