Possible, yes, effect not really sure. I've seen some of those rear mounted turbo kits and the more expensive well thought out ones generally performed better. But I think it was also a fad from like 4 yrs ago? It basically fizzled out from what I've seen.
Turbo's run off the exhaust gas, putting it all the way at the end would give you even more lag no?

Installing a remote turbo is the easy part but its finding someone to tune the car for a boosted setup that has kept most owners from trying it. When and if you can find someone that can unlock and tune the ECU it will be very expensive to dyno tune. I've thought about it several times but without a tried and true tune for a turbo setup it's just not worth the risk IMO. Also, with the fairly high compression our motors already have you'd only be able to run about 7lbs of boost without doing a motor build and you really wouldn't see the max potential of the turbo. If I could get a Precision 5857 turbo running at 37lbs like I did on my Audi I'd do it in a heartbeat but I also spent $15k building a 2.0L stroker motor that would be able to handle the boost and power.

I recall they were popular with Comaro's & vetts. It would be like a development job to make it work for a W204.
IMHO, a centrifical supercharger would be a more realistic project. Starting with a 3L+ engine, low end torque would not be a problem. Dinan supplies kits for BMW's:
