C220 CDI SPORT ESTATE
2009 220cdi sport Auto Fuel economy
I have had my C220 estate for a couple of weeks now, but am unable to get anywhere near the fuel economy figures that I have found online. Apparently I am supposed to be able to get an average mpg of 41.5. My driving is done mostly on quiet A roads, and I have driven steadily with the gear selector in C for the last 2 weeks to see what sort of economy I could get. After 2 weeks the trip computer gave me a figure of 36.5mpg which I found shocking. Has anyone got any ideas?? I used to have an 2005 Audi A4 tdi s-line avant, and that would give me 42mpg on the same roads, and I was lead to believe that the Merc would be more fuel efficient?

Hi,
I've had my C220 Sport auto for 4 years now, since new. I just missed the new C250 which was supposed to give 53 mpg but I didn't want to wait another 5 months for delivery.
In my case the overall fuel consumption from new till today has been 39.8 mpg (imperial, not US), according to the car's computer. I drive mainly on A roads and motorways but live in a hilly area that does take a toll on fuel.
Motorway driving at c.60 - 70 mph gives 49-51 mpg. Local town driving about 32 mpg and quiet A roads at 50 mph around 54 mpg.
In 2011 the engine was remapped for a 10% power & torque increase and this has not substantially changed the fuel consumption (but increased the fun). Car before was an Audi A4 2.0T S-line petrol. This was a pain on fuel (but much nicer to listen to!)
Hope this gives you some hope!

I have a late 2007 220CDI auto sedan. On a motorway trip according to the cars computer( which has rose coloured glasses) I get about 44 mpg. Every day driving with some motorway & some town it comes back to 39 mpg.
I am wondering whether the estate has a lower diff ratio ? .
Wait until you have some motor way driving & see whether you achieve my figures.
There are a lot of variables which affect my consumption some in a surprisingly large way eg wind direction, rain ( with the windscreen wipers on the brake pads feather the discs to keep them warm), tyre pressure, load in vehicle, towing, speed ( a constant 80 -85 klm/hr seems the best), amount of gear changing, hilly country , brand of tyres, quality of fuel , engine maintenance ie clean air filter etc.
Would be interested to hear how you fare.
