Sounds like the Pioneer unit doesnt store information in a flash memory, but in a powered RAM memory which loses its data when power is turned off.
Test the Pioneer first by turning it off, then on while the car is running, to make sure that the memory doesnt lose its stored information. If you lose the data just turning off the Pioneer unit while the engine is running, then the unit itself is defective.
A solution is to hook the +12 v. to an always-live voltage source such as the cigarette lighter. The disadvantage is that you will have to always turn off the unit manually to keep from running the battery down. Sounds like unintelligent Pioneer engineering, that the data erases when the car is turned off.

I replied to your pm. Run it to your battery reason because the car shuts all accessory power after the car sits for a while. it's not a defective unit. I know because I ran 3 headunits before they all had the same problem
