First time renting, need your help

I will be renting a vehicle for the first time so I have a few questions I was hoping someone could answer:

1) before picking up my car , I believe they hand me a inspection sheet to note any prior damages to the vehicle. When I do this will there be a rental agent with me? Is he supposed to sign the paper after verifying the damage. Should I take videos/pictures of the vehicle or is a copy of the inspection paper enough for me?

2) upon returning the vehicle, will the rental agent look for any damages at that time or will this be done after I leave. I ask because I have heard horror stories where some people were charged for damages after few days of returning the vehicle. So is it advisable to photograph the vehicle after returning it?

thanks

fyi= i am using Thrifty rentals::: I heard they are strict about keeping gas receipt when you return the car. If not they charge some fee, seems crazy. I hope after Hertz bought Thrifty their customer service has improved!!

1) Yes, the rental agent will verify all damage on the vehicle and mark it on the paper. You should just point out any damage that the agent missed. Pics may help, although anything not on paper will be charged (if insurance was not purchased).

2) The rental agent will check all damages prior to you leaving the store. Make sure you receive a copy of the document verifying that the vehicle returned in same shape.

However, if you purchase the CDW/LDW/PDW (depends on the company, but technically the same) which are insurance for rental cars purchased in the beginning, damages made on cars will be covered.

If you have a gold or platinum Visa or Mastercard (and some AMEX cards) it may include free rental car insurance. Check the terms with your card issuer to see if you have the free coverage. If you do, then there is no reason to purchase extra insurance from the rental car company.

Thanks for your replies. I will most likely purchase the damage waiver so I wont have to worry about paying a deductible in the event of any claim. Also I wont have to worry about every little ding or scratch~ pretty hard to avoid in NYC.
